Talk'n aboot career pathways and society.

I know many of you are still young and in school while the rest of you have already chosen a career. (unless you ended up working at Mc'donalds, then I wish you luck).

So I'm starting this topic to see what my fellow weirdos are up to, concerning their careers. I'm nearing my final years of secondary school and after that I'm moving onto University (or some other post-education).

I'm curious to see what you guys are aiming for in life. If you're still in school, and if you've finished your education where are you now?

I know that different countries have different ways of educating and different requirements for Universities or Careers, but I reckon most 1st world countries have an education system that is similar.

So I'll start off...  (click spoiler to see my career decisions)

I'm about to finish year 10. In Australia, the scores you make during year 11&12 determines if you can make it into a University or TAFE or some other form of post-education.

I'm looking in a career of Para-medicine, or better known as emergency-health. (AMBERLAMPS!)

So far there are 4 Universities in my state that offers degrees in para-medicine, the prerequisites don't look to hard and all I can do is study hard and hope for the best.

And I'm going to rant about something here.... (click spoilers to read)

So I've noticed something recently, something quite concerning.

I don't openly discuss this with my friends or peers because some of my friends/peers might feel as if I'm criticizing their choices in life. (so I decided to cower behind my computer screen)

Many of my fellow students/friends/peers are quite intelligent and I see them going somewhere in life, but the majority of people I know are rebellious to society's expectations.

I'm talking about those *cough* dumb kids. I'm friends with some and I'm concerned for them.

You probably already know many of them, either a friend or peer. They are those kids who don't care about their  education, those who don't know the gravity of the situation. I'll only rant about one of the categories of these *dumb* kids.

The Gamers.

I see them everywhere in school, all they care about is going home and playing whatever they got last summer on steam. I too play games but I put my education as a major priority. Many of the gamers in my school dropped out this year and have no idea about what they'll do in life.

I asked a gamer friend of mine: "have you made a decision about your career yet? our VCE studies are coming up"

"I'll probably be a graphics designer for video games or something"

It's like they think that their gaming experience will help them with their chosen career, I don't condone the career of "Graphic design" but to pick a career without investing an education or passion and assuming that their experience in playing games will allow them into such career, that is pure stupidity.

Society is full of these rejects, having one as my friend is really a burden of guilt.

Please don't mistake my pity for hate, this rant comes from concern, not hatred.

Assuming that you read all of my rant, thank-you for bearing though such boredom. Gimmie your opinion if you have one.

I have graduated highschool, and am currently working as a reservist police officer while attending college to obtain a degree that will assist me in getting into the FBI/DHS/NSA or any federal law enforcement agency really. While I do not mind working for local law enforcement agencies, I would much prefer to work for a federal agency and obtaining a degree would greatly assist in this goal.

And as for your concern, he may change eventually. It could just be to environmental circumstances that since his only hobby is gaming he would want to try to get a job in that hobby as it is the only thing he has any large knowledge about. If you want to help try to get him into other hobbies, as that may give him more skills to find other career paths.

Good luck on your studies, but i got to warn you, emergency medicine can be extremely disheartening. It's a good fit for people good under pressure, and able to tolerate inevitable... unfortunate events. As terrible luck would have it, I am not one of those people and made a poor decision in life. Luckily, I'm still young and plan on going back to school to become a teacher in a little over a year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for the experience, but there's just some stuff you don't want to do again after you do it the first time. I need a bit of a calmer career path!

I have no plan, and that's what worries me. I have no aspirations or passions in regards to any specific field of work, and I never finished school. I keep putting it off, and that's definitely going to bite me big time later on in life. But in my situation, there isn't really much else I can do. So I'm basically in a "We'll ride it out and see what happens" mode at the moment.

  • 11 years later...

So initially I didn't know what I wanted to do as I was getting close to graduating high school.

I decided to take a break from schooling but I was pretty close to thinking about becoming a teacher. Decided not to pursue it because of how thankless and terrifyingly stressful that career is.

Got by during the covid pandemic working in the kitchen at a tea café. No longer working there (thankfully).

Right now my money comes from selling PCs and PC parts but while that's been good for me, it's also stressful and I lost a lot of enjoyment from it recently because of memory prices skyrocketing due to AI. It used to be one of the most affordable parts but now it's worse than even GPUs.

I want out.

I want to pursue music as a solo artist, along with DJing now (that just comes with the music I make) but that's also stressful in a different way.

I don't want to play the social media game. It's necessary these days but it's overwhelming me just looking at it.

I would say I don't know how people do it, but I used to sit on Discord constantly from 2018 to like 2023 pretty badly. So uh...

Don't get me started on AI bros. They say otherwise but there's a lot of issues and contradictions there that tells me they want to become popular and make money through no effort beyond trying to type the correct prompt for a few hours.

Yet people just... listen to it and give their support blindly.

"Talented" sure bud. Takes a lot of talent to write a prompt that something else will churn out, the result sounding all the same but in a really bad way.

Go ahead and keep telling me I'll get left behind. I don't care about being in this race, creative endeavors aren't even a race. The only race here is AI bro vs AI bro. AI bros are missing what puts "human emotions & expressions" into "human emotions & expressions". Posers.

I wanted to do many things, mostly unattainable stuff, but ended up working at Disneyland, where I've made my career. But being an architect, designer, Imagineer and so many other things have been on the list of desired pursuits.

Don't give up on things because they seem impossible because SOMEONE has to do it and you'll never know unless you try. Most celebrities for example have gotten where they are by luck, with talent playing a far smaller role. You just have to be tenacious and work at being the best you can be. There is a demand for people who give it their best in any walk of life.

One thing I'd strongly recommend to anyone, especially people who are younger and have some elasticity in their brains; LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE OR A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT! Even if you have no interest in either things, or suck at both of them, do it anyway and doors will open for you. These are two things I wish I'd have done when I was younger, and the biggest regrets as far as professional applications are concerned.
