Founder Twilight Sparkle ✨ 8,526 March 29, 2012 Founder Share March 29, 2012 My referral link, anyone? I could use the extra storage space... http://db.tt/mms4tOE9 Dropbox is a great service, particularly since I have a computer for school and another one I use at home. Helps to keep my files in sync with nil effort on my part. Want to say, if you're sharing files here on the forums, you can also use our attachment system. 1 Avatar credit: robinrain8 Signature credit: Kyoshi
joeyh3 153 March 29, 2012 Share March 29, 2012 Personally, I prefer SugarSync over DropBox. SugarSync offers 2.5 times as much free storage as DropBox (5GB vs 2GB), their paid subscriptions are cheaper, and you get more free space for referrals. The main reason I picked them though is because of how it lets you sync files. With DropBox, you simply have your DropBox folder, and if you want something synced, you have to save it somewhere within that folder. With SugarSync, however, you can simply sync pre-existing folders on your computer instead. So instead of having to move all my pictures to the DropBox folder, I simply right click on my pictures folder and select "Sync this folder". I can then choose which computers it is synced to, and where it is saved on those computers, and so on.

That seems a bit more messy, I like how the Dropbox folder contains ALL the files together instead of spreading out the synced files. Also Dropbox allows for a maximum of 8GB on free. I currently have 7,25 GB available, which means it has a higher free possible space then your alternative, and if you add something as simple as you phone you can get free space. To me, it seems that being forced to clump all of your data into one folder is more messy - having folders of pictures right next to folders of music, etc. Plus, you already have a Pictures/Music/Videos/Documents folder on Windows, having to create additional ones while leaving the default ones sit around unused seems messy. Besides, the interface is very well organized, so you don't really get lost in keeping track of what's being sync'd where. Not to mention the advantages of syncing any folder on your computer: 1) If you use multiple programs that save to the same location, it's much more convienant to sync to just sync that location instead of always saving to an alternative location/changing the default location in every program. 2) Some programs do not even allow you to choose where data is stored (especially logs, configuration data, etc), but you would still like to back them up/sync them. With DropBox, you'd manually have to copy the files to your DropBox folder every so often. With SugarSync, you just sync that folder and forget about it. 3) The ability to choose what folders are synced allows you greater control over your data. For example, if you wanted something backed up online on one computer, but don't want it syncd to the other computers on your account, you simply sync that folder, but don't sync it to the others. As for the space thing - 5GB is the default for free space. You get 500MB extra for every person you refer to a free SugarSync account, up to a limit of 32GB. If you refer someone to a paid account, you both get 10GB free, and there's no limit on how much you can earn for paid referrals. So the maximum amount of free space offered by DropBox is significantly lower.
