ManaMinori 4,149 October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 (edited) Two-fer topic! The discussion has been doubled! Are Luna and Celestia really immortal goddesses? Personally, I say NO. Now we can all go home and- what? Y'all want a reason why? Ugh, ok, fiiiiine. Here's my reason as to WHY I think these two alicorns are most definitely not goddesses or immortal or anything of the sort, and people who believe that they are are CRAZAY, just like every pony in Ponyville! -clears throat- Reason #1: If alicorns were truly immortal, then they would have absolutely no need to reproduce, pass on genes, and manage the birth rate at sustainable levels for their race (and it was established within the Journal of the Two Sisters that Luna and Celestia were once foals, raised by other alicorns in Canterlot at the time, and that they are simply much longer lived than unicorns, earth ponies, and pegasi (at no point in the journal canon, show canon, comic canon, movie canon, ect. do the alicorns claim they are immortal) So since Celestia and Luna had to have been born out of copulation at some point, then there must be need for alicorns to breed, meaning that they can die and are not immortal. (I think of it like the Gods and goddesses from Ah! My Goddess. They're deities (although, again, Celestia and Luna are not; as they are merely princesses), but while they're longer lived than humans, of course, they can, in fact die, and just don't need to reproduce and spawn offspring as often, due to a treaty with demons that prevent either side from actually killing each other in combat. But they can age and die, naturally, when their elongated life comes to an end at some point.) Reason #2: Raising the sun and moon every day does not make them immortal gods. Both the sun and moon could be moved by regular ol unicorns, at some point before Celestia and Luna became princesses. (as was mentioned in the Journal of the Two Sisters) granted, it took more man- er....unicorn power to manage such a feat, but they got the job done, and no one ever hailed them as immortal beings for doing what they did. Rarity's Special Somepony One thing about Rarity, as everyone, I'm sure, already knows, is that she pines over upper class stallions, like prince Blueblood, Trenderhoof, ect. Without looking for love interests in ponies who might not have a big reputation and name for themselves amongst other ponies. However, in issue #3 of the MLP Micro series comics, we see Hayseed (a hillbilly pony also seen in MLP:FIM S2E9, who's also part of the Apple family, in “Apple Family Reunion”) show that he wants Rarity to be his special somepony, though Rarity hasn't really been aware of it. From what we know of him, he's moved on from window-washing in Canterlot, to successfully running his own business. Do you think that a moral should come along, with Rarity learning to set her sights a little lower, in a suitor, to what she's been looking for, and getting cozy with Hayseed (maybe after AppleJack suggests that she give him a chance)? And ultimately come to realize that she's not “settling” so much as being exposed to someone right for her, who was right under her nose all along, and giving him a chance? Does anyone Rariseed ship? Stalliongrad 982 October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 I do think that alicorns are demi-gods which would explain how they can live for over 1000 years. Immortality? I think they probably are. Your points however are indeed valid. Before Celestia and Luna took the responsibility of raising and lowering the sun and moon, it is in the lore that the unicorns already had this ability. I don't agree that just because they are immortal they don't have to reproduce. That kinda sucks a lot of the fun out of speculating about alicorn physiology. Personally I believe that Alicorns are evolved forms of the three pony races. (to say that Alicorns are evolved unicorns would be incorrect as we can see that becoming an Alicorn is something can be earned) A unicorn becoming an Alicorn would then need to learn to fly, as was the case for Twilight. A Pegasus/Alicorn would need to learn magic and an Earth Pony/Alicorn would need to learn both. Twilight becoming an Alicorn through progressing her knowledge of magic is evidence of that. I don't buy into the notion that Celestia was always planning to make her one. It would be easier for Twilight to have learned all of her lessons if she had started them as an Alicorn. After achieving that level of enlightenment I would say that would have something to do with their lifespan. They are not however all powerful (Celestia VS Chrysalis) and are susceptible to attack. ~Signature Awesomely Made By Frozen Mint~ http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/crimson-star-r1439
Singe 2,111 October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 Alicorns appear more likely to be Chimeras as Twilight Sparkle and Candance show that it was magic that brought about their transformations. While ponies now can carry the three DNA of Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn; the lore so far shows that it's magic being the catalyst for making the Alicorn. dekutree64 713 October 12, 2014 Share October 12, 2014 (edited) I agree that alicorns are just long-lived, similar to dragons which consider 100 years to be a nap. Presumably, they had lived in Canterlot/Equestria for a very long time before the normal ponies migrated to the area, since the flag in Hearth's Warming Eve showed Celestia and Luna, so they had apparently already been born by then. But I wonder what happened to the rest of the alicorns? Did they move on to another area in response to the 3 tribes colonizing their land, or were Celestia and Luna the last two surviving by that time? Maybe converting normal ponies into alicorns is the only way they can reproduce anymore, because there are no male alicorns left. In any case, I think converting normal ponies is a new thing, and not their natural method of reproduction. As for Rariseed... no thanks. He sort of represents everything she's trying to escape from, having been born a small town pony but with a high-society heart. It would be easy for her to revert to the country lifestyle that's in her blood, but she'd feel trapped and like she wasted her potential to move on from that. Not that being a redneck makes you any less of a person, it's just a matter of personal preference, and Rarity doesn't like it. Spike, however, is every bit as chivalrous and noble-born as she ever wanted, and has loved her for a long time. So she should just get over the age/species gap and accept him Edited October 12, 2014 by dekutree64
