"We just pay them off." He said with a shrugged as he kept eating.  "It's a lot easier then hiding or tiptoeing. I think I knew at least a dozen guards by name. Good guys, bad guards." He shook his head. "But I can't blame them. Most of them have families that they can't feet on a guards salary."

"Makes sense," she agreed, noticing a Pegasus taking the table behind their's.  "Ennex always said 'why pay for something when we can get it for free'.  I guess he thought it would be easier and cheaper to just keep a clean trail.  But to each his own."  She finished off her portion of the omelet, and downed the milk.  "Speaking of which, after this, I better head over to our waterfront warehouse.  He's put me in charge of a new contract.  Just a simple delivery run twice a week, but," she smiled, "it will be the first time I've been in charge of a contract without his direct involvement!"

The pegasus hummed quietly to himself in thought. This 'Ennex' character seemed to be the head of this little scheme they were running. He internally commended their use of the classic 'waterfront warehouse'. Perhaps a smuggling operation?

 

"-sir?"

"Hm?" The stallion shook his head, noticing the waitress standing at his table, along with the cup of steaming hot coffee in front of him.

"Your coffee, sir," she smiles.

"Oh, thank you," he chuckled, an awkward grin on his face, "apologies, I spaced out for a second."

 

The mare walked off, and he took a sip of his coffee as he subtly listened in some more. Perhaps he may tag along with this mare on her little 'delivery run'. No big moves just yet; just a little observation to see what exactly was going on. His heart fluttered a little with excitement as he realised he may have just found the jackpot, and he wasn't even in town for a day!

Malachi smiled. "Congrats!  Ennex must really trust you." He said as he finished eating himself. "But I still want to come with and watch your back. No matter what kind of job your doing there is always a chance something might go down. ' He grabs his bat and stands up. "Don't worry about the bill, I get to eat here for free." He grinned."

She smiled, and didn't question his comment.  Malachi did say he came her alot, after all.  "Alright," she said, getting up herself, "Shall we head out?  The waterfront isn't that far away from here.  should make for a nice walk."  As they stepped out, she noticed the waitress smiling at them.  Guess he really IS a regular here...

The pegasus enjoyed some more of his coffee before he made his move; didn't want to follow them right away and make them suspicious, especially since he was sure they knew he was there. Once they had left the restaurant, he waited exactly a minute before grabbing his saddlebags. His coffee was just about half-finished, but he could make up for that later.

 

He quickly spotted the waitress on his way out and shoved a few coins at her, plus a small tip, adding a rather rushed thank-you. He set out the door looked both ways, catching his targets just a ways further down. With a small smirk, he began his pursuit, carefully pushing past other pedestrians until he was a few paces behind, then slowed to a casual stroll to avoid any suspicion.

 

This'd be easier than he thought.

Cliber bumped into a couple of ponies coming out of the diner. he glared at them. 'hmmm...theres darkness in them...' he thought,

'but they look like they got money, perhaps they could get me a job...but i'll have to be careful...'

 

"my apologies, i was not looking where i was going. i find myself in need of money. as it looks like you have it, iwas wondering if you were in need of protection."

Malachi stumbled slightly when the stallion bumped into him. Then he raised an eyebrow when the stallion asked if he needed protection... ain't that ironic? The irony was wasn't so far from Malachi that he started laughing. "Oh,,,Oh lord." He laughed a little more. He calmed down a bit to a normal chuckle. "No, I think we're good buddy. That's what the bat's for." He said twirling his bat in a hoof.

Sakuya roller her eyes at Malachi.  Show off, she thought, but a hint of a grin still teased her face.  Still, it's not like he needs any protection.  As for myself- she broke off, as a sudden thought occurred.  Up until now, she'd always had Ennex's thugs watching her apartment, and they were most likely being controlled by Ravage.  Might be nice to have somepony who only reported to me, she thought.  "What's your name?" she asked the stallion...

The pegasus halted, slinking into an alleyway entrance to watch this little meeting. Just who was this new pony, and what was his angle? He certainly didn't look local; in fact he looked like a traveller. What would he want with some high-end business ponies?

 

He spotted the rather impressive sword on the unicorn's side. He wouldn't mind getting his hooves on one of those, but he doubted he could just walk up and ask to hoof it over. Regardless he kept an ear open...

Caliber blinked.

 

"dude, thats something you can get for 12 bits at the general store. maybe if you go on advetures like me, you'll get something like THIS!"

 

SHINNNG!! the top half of the bat cluttered on the ground

 

"now THIS" Caliber said looking at his sword, "is a weapon, not found anywhere. given to me by a dragon. can you say the same?

 

Caliber seathed his sword and turned to the other pony in his presence. "names caliber, so, how abou it?"

Malachi stopped and stared at the top half of his bat that was now lying on the ground.  Both of his eyes were open. But his red eye seemed like it started to glow. "..." He opened his mouth a few times but nothing came out. After taking a deep breath he finally said something. "A dragon my have not given me this bat... But my father did...." Malachi said in a deadly even tone. Outside he was calme, but inside there was a raging fire of anger.  Malachi is furious.

"hmmm...i am sorry, i did not know."

 

Caliber picked up the bat-half of the ground.

'this isn't good, if i make them mad, they won't want to hire me' Caliber thought

 

"please accept my apologies, and my offer to help fix it." Caliber

'i know i know a bonding spell..."

 

Caliber looked at him

The pegasus watched on from his hiding spot, tutting and rolling his eyes. Another one of those holier-than-thou wandering adventurer types. Typical.

Though, the other pony looked absolutely ready to kill. He toyed with the thought of nabbing the sword from his dead body, though that'd be a bit of a messed up thing to do. Plus he couldn't risk blowing his cover, though a street brawl may provide the distraction he needs.

Malachi was doing everything ha can to keep himself from slamming what was left of his bat into the stallions face with enough force to send his head flying over one of the skyscrapers. He took in a few more breathes. He shoved the other half his bat into the stallions hoof and turned away form him. He was afraid is he saw him he couldn't stop himself. "Fix it... or I might kill you..." He said bluntly.

'heh, guy thinks he can kill me. thats cute, but i dont want a fight.' Caliber thought 'though i WOULD have some trouble...'

 

"sure, no prob!" he called at the pony. he turned to the other pony once again.

 

"so, whats you're name" Caliber said as he began a spell to fix the bat. "and again, how about it? could i be of some help to you?"

Having remained silent throughout the exchange, Sakuya was trying to hide a grin.  This guy has some serious over-confidence, she thought, noticing that Malachi was barley able to contain his rage.  She cocked an eyebrow at him, trying to catch his eye, and gently shook her head to keep him from ripping the other apart.  Maybe I could use somepony like this.  My own personal 'Ravage', so to speak.  Even if, she glanced at his head, he's a unicorn...As Caliber worked to fix the bat, she took a step forward.  

 

"Caliber, huh?  What brings you to the city today?"

"i was not BROUGHT here, i wandered here." Caliber said, "by that i mean i was running low on money and suplies. i came here looking to get a high paying job sometime soon, so i could get my supplies and get out of here. civilization...i just don't fit in anymore...so! i'll ask you once again: whats your name? and who was the guy i offended?"

 

'there're going to hire me, but i can't shake the feeling someones watching me...or my sword...' Caliber thought 'hmmm...i'll have to keep my guard up...who knows if that one guy will take revenge...?'

The pegasus sighed through his teeth, obviously not impressed by this 'Caliber' pony's attitude.

Obviously if you need supplies, then you were brought here, he snarked internally.

 

Accurate terminologies aside, he figured that this unicorn was looking for some kind of bodyguard work. If he ever had to clash with this guy, he could probably use that ego of his against him. The thought of him outsmarting that 'wandering hero' over there made him snicker.

While Malachi was still cooling off, Sakuya decided to continue.  "My name is Sakuya," she said, "and I might just be able to help you.  But you might want to finish working on that first," she indicated the broken bat.  "My..." she glanced at Malachi, "friend, can only contain his anger for so long."  She gave Caliber a questioning look.  "What's wrong with civilization?  You in a rush to leave?  Because," she lowered her eyelids, "I might have a long-term opportunity for you..."

"well, that just depends...have you got any one-of-a-kind items you'd be willing to part with? of course you don't have to, its just that i like colecting that sort of stuff. you never know, it could be useful, as you can see..."

 

*gestures towards his sword*

 

"but if you don't have one, i'd still be happy to work for bits..."

 

'i don't know why, but this particular pony seems... special...' caliber thought

 

"WELL, i suppose i should tell you, as you seem like someone who could help me, im willing to do anything as long as its in reasonable prices. this includes eveything from errands to defending you from dragons and you know what? ive never been in manehatten. i guess i could stay here longer than normal."

"Manehatten living is unique in Equestria,"Sakuya offered.  "You're in the middle of a big city, but also can be alone and isolated as well.  As for items, can't say that I have any, honestly.  Never had the time or interest in collecting."  She deliberately didn't mention her collection of Zebra artifacts.  "But you would be well paid.  I could even swing a private apartment in a specific building."  Once again, she indicated the bat.  "Finish working on that, then walk with us, and we can discuss it."

"sounds like a plan." caliber as he finished the bat, "i look forward to working with you. and i still haven't gotten his name yet. the owner of the bat."

 

"so, as i can tell by you're broken horn that you're problably a zebra-type magic user, and that means that you have some sort of artifact i have one too, as a matter of fact." caliber reached into his backpack and pulled out a mask. "she called it a thank-you mask. since i already have one, i would have no use for yours. so, maybe i can see them, sometime though?"

 

caliber looked at her "i always love seeing exotic stuff! oh, and HERE!!" caliber tossed the bat back to the owner, who caught it. "be sure not to hit something with that today! it might break again! so! shall we go?" caliber looked back at her

The pegasus waited for the ponies to continue moving, watching Caliber repair the bat. A rather thuggish weapon, but if it works then it works. He did wish they would hurry up and move on; it wouldn't be long before somepony caught him skulking around in the alley and start asking questions, or worse.

 

Plus, he was anxious to see this waterfront operation this 'Ennex' pony had going, not to mention hopefully even see the stallion himself.

Malachi clinched his now fixed bat in his hoof. He didn't even look when he caught it. He looked it over for a little bit before turning back around to face the stallion."Thank you." Thin just as fast as the stallion was before, he cracked his bat right into the stallions left foreleg, making a loud crack on contacted. "Now we're good." HE flet his bat happy to see it was just like it was.
