What Fantasy Race would you most like to be?

Are we talking purely humanoid or anything? Cuz an ancient dragon would be badassery incarnate. Preferably the kind people go to for sage advice rather than the kind that adventurers try to slay for glory or out of misconceived fear.

Ooo, I got another one. I'd like to be the metaphysical embodiment of a letter or number. I'd like to be the numbers one or zero probably. One is all-defining and one is all-consuming. You can't lose either way, so to speak.

I'd wander the universe telling them of the wonders of the number one. The great beginnings of the number zero. Give them a glimpse of the universe simply by speaking to them of my craft.

Dragon, all the way, one that kills anything stupid enough to stand up to it.

Although I'd prefer to remain the master race, human, I'd have to go with a lich, incredibly powerful and hard to kill.

If humans are the master race how come in pretty much any fantasy ever the average human is outclassed by nearly every race in strength, agility, intelligence, affinity for magic and the world around us? For all intents and purposes humans should be extinct if it weren't for the good graces of all the other races that like to call us allies rather than enemies.

It's more a case of if you kill them all, you lose them as a food source.

Depending on your source material, yes. They could be used for racial grooming too though. Take a nice blonde here, a lithe body there...breed them with the best of your stock to preserve dominant traits in your species.

I speak from the dragon's angle, but yeah, that's doable too.

Plenty of reasons to keep humans around, and not because they are our allies.

Because humans have a natural knack and tenacity for loyalty and although they are usually portrayed as easily corrupted or petty in a lot of fantasy universes, a lot of the bravest and best of heroes in fantasy are humans for those very reasons. Humans know how to raise above such harrowing odds against them in fantasy universes despite all signs telling them they don't stand a chance.

That's kinda precisely my point. The odds are so against humans that the only way they really survive and become heroes is because the author thinks his own race should have a slice of the action.

Loyalty is often stronger in races like dwarves and (depending on the number of subraces) elves than any human. Even man's own curiosity and ingenuity is eclipsed completely by gnomes.

Man is a delusional race who believes themselves more important than the slavestock that they would be otherwise.

WHAT NO LOVE OF MAN ON DRAGON SMEXYTIMES!? You just don't understand their love, man!

Typically more of a profession than a race though I'm sure there's at least one fiction out there where there is an appreciable difference.

Lord of the Rings, at least if you don't read The Silmarillion, and even then, still sort of is.

I'd be a Griffon! B)  They just fascinate me

Tell me there is a more majestic mythical creature than a Griffon:

Having never read the Lord of the Rings books and remembering little of the movies I wouldn't have known that. I always thought Gandalf was just a super badass human who learned magic and became immortal or something thanks to said magic. :D

No, he and the other Wizards are Maiar (did I spell that right?) spirits sent to Middle Earth in human form, to aid the people there against Sauron (who was originally a Maiar himself).

EDIT: My sister would be so proud of me, she's nuts about Lord of the Rings, something has rubbed off somewhere.

Griffons are boring compared to dragons.

If you think I am nuts about dragons, you would be right.

The wizards in "Harry Potter" could possibly be considered a different race, since a person cannot choose to become one if they were not born with natural magical abilities.  But I don't really know for sure.  I don't know much about fantasy races.  I just want to be one that can do magic.

I like both mythical creatures almost equally, so I think I'm similarly nuts about them :P
