lunarpony7 183 November 27, 2014 Share November 27, 2014 Just thought I had. I've read about how some people think magic is a good explanation for how earth ponies and pegasi can hold objects with their hooves. I thought it was the best explanation, cartoon logic aside. I think that the fact Tirek could seal magic from earth ponies and pegasi obviously shows they are magical creatures too, and that it makes sense that they, can, in fact hold things with magic Whatchya think? VitalSpark 1,830 November 27, 2014 Share November 27, 2014 It is established that earth ponies and pegasi are magical creatures. Earth ponies have super strength and a connection to nature; pegasi can walk on clouds and can fly. (Yes, they do have wings, and I'm not suggesting that everything that can fly is magic. However, pegasus wings do not appear big enough to achieve enough enough lift for a pony, so I'm guessing there must be magic helping them out.) For some specific examples, consider Pinkie's "Pinkie Sense" (and Cheese Sandwich's "Cheesy Sense"), Maud Pie's amazing speed and strength when rescuing her sister, Big Mac pulling an entire house, and any time Bulk Biceps is able to fly! Unicorns are no more magical than the other two kinds of pony, but unicorn magic is more obvious, and they have fine grained control of it. So yes, I think magic is a reasonable explanation for how they hold things in their hooves. I assume unicorns can also do this, but prefer to use telekinesis because it allows them to remain standing on all four hooves, which is a steadier way for a pony to stand. 3 ~VitalSpark~ [fimfiction] [deviantart]
Unikitty 1,212 November 27, 2014 Share November 27, 2014 I remember reading and writing about this many ages ago. The abridged version was that it is assumed unicorn horns are made of keratin, and is the same material that's in hooves(further details referenced similar general anatomical design between both hooves and horn). This means it's understandable that both would channel magic in the same manner.Coupled with the theory that all pony races share a similar origin, it is understandable that magic is a prominent feature of all modern races(unicorn magic, and pegasus flight(because let's face it, they simply couldn't be flying without some arcane abilities). So it would make sense that non-unicorns would have a certain magical magnetism that allows fine manipulation with their hooves. It's likely that unicorns can do so too, but would just find horn magic easier. It's a rusty writing, but the general idea is there.

sweetolebob18 728 November 27, 2014 Share November 27, 2014 Somebody who's name & post location I can't recall said it's called "tactile telekinesis". I remember, back in the 60s & 70s at SF cons there were debates on the difference between magic & psionics. The consensus was "if you call it psi, the religious folks don't accuse you of witchcraft" That's why a lot of the early Darkover books stress that the Comyn powers were psionic. Now, magic has grown acceptable enough to be in a kid's cartoon show. Progress, I suppose.
