Arctofire 227 December 12, 2014 Share December 12, 2014 (edited) Past Sins in my opinion was always the very essence of what My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Movie should be. The story is massively popular: easily being the most popular fanfiction to date. I was just wondering as when they made Equestria Girls with the fanfic style premise and fan pandering, did anyone know about Past Sins and how to make a good MLP Movie. I know the story has only around 1 million views, but you've got to be serious here. There is so much fan art and everything. Sometimes I feel that there maybe subtle references to the novel: like when Celestia wakes up from a dream; returning to Everfree castle; Twilight teaching the CMC. My theory is that they knew something similar to Past Sins for MLP: The Movie was what every brony wanted, but they couldn't do that because the novel raised some uncomfortable questions and would be sure to get the 12 rating. As it was a show for little girls they needed to find something that everybody liked. So they decided to take inspiration from some lighter fanfics many of which involved humans. They would then turn it into a movie which was a combination between High School Musical and The Wizard Of Oz, and put loads of fan pandering to keep a huge chunk of the fan base interested. The team from the comics said that EQG was emulating very closely to what the fans wanted, and if you didn't like EQG, it was your fault. What I'm sure they were trying to do is to please everyone, because I feel they may have known how popular Past Sins was. Dark Qiviut 22,444 December 12, 2014 Share December 12, 2014 (edited) I don't know if they do, and specific portions of the staff — specifically the writers — can't know about it nor even try to explore. Hasbro is absolutely conservative to the point of petrified about third-party sources as inspiration for official content. None of the writers are allowed, by contract, to review any third-party content (specifically fan-made) out of risk of being sued for plagiarism, including fanfiction. ukxRainbowdash 165 December 12, 2014 Share December 12, 2014 dark qiviut is right, no writers are aloud to know about any third party content. Meghan Macarthy once said that also in an interview for the hub with Tara Strong. 2 "One of the greatest mental freedoms is not caring what others think of you." Andaasonsan 3,205 December 12, 2014 Share December 12, 2014 As said before, they're contractually obligated to avoid fan fiction. Also I view fan fiction as being like the infinite number of monkeys with the infinite number of typewriters (eventually one will type out Hamlet word for word by accident) in that you have so many people exploring so many possible permutations of where the story could go, that's it's kind of inevitable that the writers will cover ground already covered by fan fics. Application REJECTED!
Arctofire 227 December 13, 2014 Author Share December 13, 2014 Well that's very sad, but is it possible that maybe a fan film adaptation could be made and could get permission from Hasbro like Double Rainboom did.

That would be amazing! I wonder how that would work though, I mean a whole movie is pretty different that a student produced short episode.
