Cannon Time

Having watched every episode at least four times and a few I’ve watched more than I’d be willing to admit in public. I started a Fanfic, as I’m trying to keep it as absolutely true to cannon time. I have found myself referring to various episodes to confirm a line here and there.  Dredging trough old posts I found this posting.

It’s a good start but it still only covers a small section of the bigger picture.

One of the main issues I’ve stumbled with is passage of time. So I started doing a baseline calendar based off Cannon quotes and knowns. Some of the dates I’ve worked in based off extrapolation and a pure conjecture on my part. If you feel you have a better date to plug in feel free to flame me in the comments and set me straight, if I missed something important please hit me up I will add it to this time hack.  This is a work in progress any feedback that helps will be plugged in happily.

 

Year -2 -10000                    Discord banished by the two sisters brought peace to Equestria for X years.

The first time we have to establish is “Moons”, from what I have seen it is a Very flexible unit measuring from 1 day to 1 month context dependent

Throughout the series Moons has been used to describe time, in some of these its reference a day in others like EQG I believe its referencing months.

My hypothesis for this is Luna stating the portal only opens every 30 Moons, if this was a day cycle it would mean that for sunset would be free to come and go at a whim.

(note: I’m using a 30 day moon cycle as starting point on month based moons)

To further this if the moon cycle is a 30 month turn for the portal it would mean that Sunset shimmer would have had to enter it 60 months prior (roughly five years) in order for her to have won the crown 3 other times in high school so that would have put her out of the Castle a full two years prior to that.

So with Sunset a senior in high school and Twilight a junior at best, (it’s the only way I can see Celestia having trained Sunset without twilights knowledge of her existence

The events in The Cutie Mark Chronicles show Twilight applying for school.  IMO, Twilight was either 5 years old (if applying for kindergarten) or 6 (if it was 1st grade).  If you assume that this happened about 10 years ago, then T was 15 or 16 in the pilot.  The only way this is possible is if time runs at a different rate on Earth than in EQ (like in Digimon).  The events in EQ Girls seem to indicate Sunset was a senior & The Rainbooms were a year or 2 younger.  IMO, they were sophomores & about Twilight's age.

I did some analysis and found that the show makes it quite clear there are about 100 moons in a year.  But then again, other statements contrary to this aren't too hard to find either.  Unfortunately time in Equestria just doesn't lend itself to being pinned down very well.  Anyway, my argument for 1 year = 100 moons is in this video: https://youtu.be/O5jEb0CTCvA?t=3m28s

Unfortunately, it feels as though the timeline wasn't given too much attention and the episodes don't really seem to air in proper order of a linear timeline.  I've seen a couple of people try to put it together before.  When it was just season 1's episodes only, it was still reasonably feasible.  But with the later episodes and seasons it becomes questionably inconsistent at times.

 

For example:  Season 4 - part 1 and 2 (Princess Twilight Sparkle) seems to indicate that this is the first time the Summer Sun Celebration occurs with Luna being back.  Apparently this suggests that the time between S1E01 and S04E01 is a total of just one year (everything crammed in only a year.  Then there is the questioning of how long that year is in Equestria.  Apple Family Reunion (S03E08) suggests that family reunion happens once every 100 moons (the previous one was in S01E01).  Can't quite determine if a year is just 100 moons (or if the Apple Family reunion is not an annual thing, although can't remember if they say it is or not).  Things get a little bit more difficult to put together once you start putting the episodes togeher, but it might actually be feasible to still make a (mostly) consistent timeline of the episodes (better to assume they air out of order of a linear timeline and must be re-ordered as well).   There are some other episodes that all help indicate time (and other inconsistencies but I can't recall them and you have to go re-watch to look for these details).

 

There are some timelines that people placed for just season 1 somewhere (some videos on YT, but I can't find them atm, sorry).  But I'd figure at this point, including all episodes (currently to S05E06),  Might only be nearing just two years in time or less at this point (conservative guess, but might even be less or more).

The Apple reunion in episode 1. IMO, this was a mistake. I think it was specified that AJ was in charge of the food for the Summer Sun Festival.  It was referred to as a reunion in some later episode (ICR which one)  IMO, the other Apples were there partly for the festival & partly to help out.

 

I base this on Apple Family Reunion where Granny Smith tells Apple Bloom "This is your 1st reunion"

 

As to the order of episodes Winter Wrap Up comes before Fall Weather Friends & that has to be wrong. The writers can be damn careless about these details -it is extremely annoying.
