I can't say the same for all TV shows, but in the case of MLP specifically I think it's perfectly acceptable to pirate. Despite the excellent quality of the show, it's intended purpose is still that of a toy commercial. They want you to watch it. I really don't think the company cares if you pay to watch it or not because they know that the more you watch and grow to love the show, the better the chances are that you will buy licenced merch.

Because (atleast in the UK) The DVD's are randomly selected episodes and over priced for usually containing 2-4 episodes per DVD/ I will honestly keep buying the Merch and watch the show an TV and A
