There are many words like this, and it is known as the difference between connotation and denotation. Every word has a denotation, a dictionary definition, and many words have a connotation that often differs from their denotation to varying degrees. These evolve out of popular culture and vernacular over long periods of time.

In addition, connotation can take on a personal tint: the same word can mean very different things to different people on the connotative level as a result of their personality and life experiences.
