Stallionslaughter 394 March 14, 2015 Share March 14, 2015 (edited) I just got over the flu, so my death-vocals burned out really quick. I would have posted this in my music thread, but I made a new thread for Skullbuster. At any rate, I was seriously impressed with Skullbuster's rhymes. He is really good. I've never done a lead singing vocals before, so if you could give me some criticism, it'd be greatly appreciated. (No seriously. Be mean, be rude, or whatever. I need pointers.) By the way, I used the old drum track while I re-recorded the guitars. I would have really liked to have re-recorded the drums, but I was having trouble matching the rap with the beat. I cannot wait to get my hands on the kit with the new recording equipment. Maybe I can cancel out some of that awful overbearing cymbal splash. (I need soundproofing. The walls of the room where I recorded the drums are way too bright.) Grepper 3,192 April 2, 2015 Share April 2, 2015 If you want this critique to be mean, mentally insert insults and curse words in it while you read it. Okay, I'll try doing a critique of this song. Among many other genres, I listen to some metal (mostly by Princewhateverer,) but I don't follow any mainstream metal bands. I think the drums were mastered too loudly (the drums made it hard to hear the lyrics,) and the vocals should be a bit louder relative to the guitars. Did you record it in such a way that you can change the volumes of the instruments independently? I listened to it with earbuds, and noticed that the stereo image was quite narrow. Would it be possible to "widen it?" I don't sing in a metal style, or much at all, for that matter, so I can't help you with that. Well, thanks for sharing, and it's better than I can currently do at my level of guitar playing/audio production experience.

I was using an older set-up with live drums, and the recording set up made many things 'duck' behind the bass drum and many other elements. I think my new set-up would really set this off, but it's done and over with. I think that in terms of narrow stereo, I will need an enhancer of some kind. I tried with some reverb, but it didn't work. I also tried to record twice on two channels, but that also didn't work. You have a keen ear, and I really appreciate the insight. I'll probably use this advice on future mixes. Floor Tom - Stallionslaughter - Commission Pencil Artist ASK STALLIONSLAUGHTER THREAD

PlunderSteed 1,252 April 7, 2015 Share April 7, 2015 Congrats on making EQD! As far as the mastering goes, I'm afraid the only way to balance the drums would be to record on 4 different channels. That way you can apply compression and EQ separately, and not have to choose between too-loud cymbals and too-quiet toms.
