How would you feel about a ponified Linux distro?

In my time in this fandom, I've noticed a large part of you are Windows users and have no experience with Linux. Well, I'm thinking of building a Linux distribution that will sport plenty of pony but also provide an easy to use Linux desktop. I feel that having experience with Linux would actually do you guys some good, especially if you want to get into any kind of IT field. Either way, it would be a fun project, and I hope that at least some would try it, and maybe even use it daily. Not to mention, Linux handles Java applications (such as Minecraft) much faster than Winblows. :P

I know there's already a PonyOS, but it's not Linux, nor is it remotely forgiving to beginners. It's BSD-based, and has no package manager. This means if you wanted to install something, you'd have to get the source code and go through the normal POSIX rotation on it (configure, make, make install) and have to worry about dependencies (which 99% of you likely have never heard of) and all that shit. The vast majority of the fandom would be lost.

Why Linux?

Well, the only free kernels I'm comfortable using are Linux and HURD, and HURD is such a piece of shit that it barely works after 20 years of development. Maybe in a few more decades it'll be useful. Linux, on the other hand, is a damn good piece of FOSS (free and open-source software) and is very stable and secure. You don't need an antivirus, you don't have to worry about it suddenly crashing one day and never booting again, and you don't have to worry about disk fragmentation. Unless you like haphazardly toying with important system files without first learning about them, you likely won't break it. I plan to base it on Ubuntu, rather than doing it entirely from scratch. I'm just one nerd. I don't have the time, money, manpower, or resources to make my own package manager, port packages or host repositories. Besides, Ubuntu is the shit. I use it myself. It's the Linux distro that made me ditch Winblows entirely.

Why Ubuntu?

It's very user-friendly, very forgiving to Linux newbies and very stable. The average Windows convert will spend maybe five minutes googling before he/she's punching away at their keyboard and installing new software, customizing it to their liking, and taking advantage of its flexibility and speed.

So what's your plan?

Well, first and foremost, it will provide an out-of-the-box working desktop. The usual Linux way is to include nothing in a fresh install that isn't free and open-source, but fuck that. You honestly can't go without using some pieces of closed-source software that has you tied to a license agreement. As far as that goes, I plan to include Google Chrome, Oracle's JRE, Steam, and of course, media codecs. This is perfectly legal as long as it's still freeware, and you're not breaching the license agreements (which I doubt you will). And of course, a fuckton of open-source software will be packaged in that you would expect to find in any working desktop. And what a perfect time to make an Ubuntu derivative, 15.04 "Vivid Vervet" is about to be released this month. I will make a new release of this distro following Ubuntu's six-month release cycle, with each release putting a different pony in the spotlight.

However, I will only follow through with this if I have some confidence I'll have a userbase, otherwise I'm wasting my time. And if I have confidence that people will actually use it, I will only ponify the amd64 branch, meaning it will only run on 64-bit processors. Sorry, this is 2015. If you're using a 32-bit machine as anything but a Minecraft server for you and your friends, an upgrade is long overdue.

And now I have a question for you (the prospective user). What pony would you like for the first release to be named/themed after? This can be any canon MLP character, pony or otherwise.

As for those of you wondering what Ubuntu looks like, this is a screenshot of my desktop. Only difference between this and stock Ubuntu is that I have the Numix theme and icons installed.

GIVE ME ALL OF YOUR MONEY

Oh wait - Linux is (usually) free.

#LinuxDaBest

Ummm....

Ponybuntu?

And have it cycle

Twibuntu

Applebuntu

Rainbuntu

Raribuntu

Flutterbuntu

Pinkiebuntu

(These names are really stupid)

But yeah, I'd totally do it. I suggest a mod instead of an entire freakin distro, though.

It sounds like an interesting project! I've always wanted to roll my own linux distro, but only when I have the time to deal with it. I'd probably base it off of Debian instead of Ubuntu, but I can see the benefits of both. As for naming... I'm sorry, I'm downright terrible with chosing version names.

Mint is considered a separate distro, despite the fact that it's basically Ubuntu with Cinnamon and ubuntu-restricted-extras installed.

Debian is very solid (as in server-worthy), but wouldn't appeal to beginners quite as much.

Ponebuntu 2.10 (Reckless Rainbow)

I cede to you the internet, that name is god-tier.

What is the difference between a vanilla Ubuntu release and your distro, besides the name?

As far as I know, Ubuntu already is loaded with proprietary crap software.

Well, I plan to remove the shitware (such as that Firefox spin that constantly shows you those fucking annoying prompts). It'll be more Linux and less Canonical.
