OC concept help

Hello there!

 

So, recently, I've been trying to come up with a decent backstory for this OC I wanted to make, and I wanted a little bit off feedback on his/her concept before I start to really go through with the master plan. 

 

Basically, they're (undecided gender as of now) going to be a pony who's mute. They're still optimistic and happy, and don't let the fact that they're unable to speak bring them down. Their cutie mark is going to be something related to birds and music, as their talent is whistling and communicating with birds (no clue if that works or not). I've googled it, and read up on some things about muteness, and it seems that those who are mute can still whistle, but I was wondering if it was a little bit insensitive and bordering on rude to those with the disability. Thoughts?

You can use her for any reference you want. In any case, I think it's good to making OC's with disabilities. Some OC's out there have endless disabilities or inhibitions, it's really all up to how you RP them, and "care" for them, I think. "Care" basically meaning how your own opinions affect the roleplay decisions you make with a specific character. Care may not be the right word, but it's the best thing I could think of.

I'll put some thought on the character background.

 

I for one don't think the character is insensitive unless you end up portraying them in a negative fashion for the majority of their life.

 

Otherwise are they antisocial, like fluttershy and rather spend their time with animals?

A little bit: they don't mind interacting with ponies, but prefer to interact with birds, because it's the only way they can sort of communicate properly.

Being mute they could of been the foal that was kind of looked at weird, so they were excluded from most other groups. the other foals may not of known that they were mute, they all just thought they were weird never talking to everyone even when spoken to. Not really having friends and not able to actually voice themselves to try to make friend, they end up spending a lot of their time in the park. Eventually they learn how to whistle and realize they could communicate with birds easily.

 

That what I have so far for the background, not sure how to integrate other ponies into their life.

Sort of? XD I'm planning on calling him something along the lines of "Whistler", or something like that. He has a design though! Super rough sketch with everywhere proportions but here he is. ^^ Does his colour scheme look alright?

Well as for any OC, make him have flaws. From what you told me it looks like he/she could be socially akward, and have little to no friends at all except maybe Fluttershy or some other pony who shares his/her interests, or that can go past his mute condition. Communication with other ponies would be extremely difficult as it's kind of impossible for them to have a language based on finger movements, so he's probably very misunderstood. Even with that, do not make him a cliche "no one understands absolutely perfect guy" pony. Even though people reject him, he is not necessarily a completely flawless character to anyone who gets past that.
