movies/tv Why do people act like Anime is somehow "different" Cartoons?

Because people like to act like they're "cultured" for enjoying something from a different country. Gives them the convoluted reason they've been looking for to look down on others.

They are cartoons, Japanese cartoons to be more exact. That doesn't change based on what kind of age group the anime is geared towards, they're still the cartoons of Japan.

Anime fans are part of a special snowflake community that want to seem special for watching Japanese cartoons. This doesn't include all anime watchers of course, but I'll be damned if it doesn't include the majority. It shouldn't come as a surprise that deeper anime like Steins;Gate, Paranoia Agent, Monster and Trigun have a much more relaxed and mature audience, as opposed to things like Shokugeki no Soma, Freezing and Ah My Goddess. That's speaking from experience of course, not from statistics or facts.
