A quick look at the website for IP.Board doesn't show that there is an API for the forums. Is there another way that I can interface the forums outside of a web browser? I was thinking feeds for a second but that wouldn't allow most of the functionality that the web offers, like viewing profiles...

There is no (publicly available) API. But there are built-in functions that may make whatever you're trying to do (short of a bot) easier, for example http://mlpforums.com/index.php?app=forums&module=forums&section=findpost&pid=POSTID.
