A maximum character indicator for Status updates

Are you one of those users who have written a somewhat lengthy status update or response only to see the message cut off with elipses? It'd be nice that as we type, we know how many characters we have before the message is cut off.

Regular posts already have a character count and somewhere there should already be the code that gives the threshold for when status updates/replies get cut off. So then why not use that information to tell us the limit of how much we can type? That way we know that the message we send will arrive in full. Or at the very least, if the message is too long, send an error message to the person telling that the message is too long and simply have us revise.

(EDIT: Made some corrections and the post more readable.)

I would be a fan of this- it would give you an idea if your status should be a status or a blog post, and I think that it would make blogs a bit more popular than they already are.

From what I remember, Status Updates as a whole have always been a hell to edit thanks to how IP.Board works.

Even adding something as simple as that can be a problem, and there are bigger issues out there to be fixed. So yeah, for now I don't see it as possible.
