Pony Names

So I've wanted to write a fanfic for a while. A sort of romance adventure involving 2 OCs. One was easy, a bright pink pegasus pony who loves adventure and is really good at cartography. The other is a brown-furred scientist unicorn. The unicorn is a bit of a nerd and his special talent is being able to tell exactly what is in any liquid solution (basically, he's a chemist). I named the pegasus Compass Rose because it sounds beautiful, and has to do with her talent. But I can't for the life of me come up with a decent name for the unicorn. I wonder if anyone else has any ideas?

 

How do you come up with Pony names in general? Should fanfics be full of ocs with pun names or do we need to come up with something other than changing a letter in a famous person's name to make it sound horsey?

Larry Litmus, or just Litmus (The Litmus Test).

 

P.H. Dee, which stands for Pansy Horatio Dee. He is obviously embarrased by his first name, which is why he goes by P.H. Dee; This would also imply some hidden compatibility as both of their names have flowers in them.

 

Its 3 in the morning, so thats all I got at the moment.

 

My criteria for picking names is

 

1. Does it describe an important ascpect of the character?

2. Does it sound like it could be a real person's name?

3. Is there a fun quirk or backstory to it (alliteration, puns, wordplay, meta stuff)?

 

Because of this, I rarely suggest ponified names of famous people (though I guess that is an avenue that could be explored)

Litmus is perfect. Not sure I like Larry though. I started to think of flowers beginning with an L, but all I come up with is Lily I think I need something Latin

I did a little research on flowers that begin with L:

Larkspur

Laurel

Lavender

Lilac

Lotus

Latin could work too, but I can't think of anything at the moment good luck!

I wish I could help a bit more, for my OC I just used a couple different random word generators until I got something I liked, then created a picture and backstory based of that.

My husband suggested Litmus Leaf, and I might go with that. But Laurel and Larkspur are pretty names too.... do I want his name to be 'pretty'? or should I go back to latin... Litmus Floresco.....Rosid... the latin word for leaf is 'folium'

 

but leaf is easier to understand, I think.

Given that litmus is derived from lichen, and you are looking for a potentially Latin name, you could try the lichenized genus of fungi Roccella.

 

Litmus Roccella? Sounds like a fun guy.
