So which princess is most like a princess? I found Luna is the closest to what a princess is like.

The reason being is that I find the writers just trying too hard to make all the princesses look goofy and "oh I'm so down to earth" or something that it's unappealing. Twilight wasn't a princess in the beginning and the writers have a hard time making her the regular Twilight again that it looks bad but case in point she still doesn't act like a princess. Celestia has that trollish goofy nature of her like when she invited the mane six and discord to the Grand Galloping Gala just so they could turn it into a mess like she hoped for. Cadence is the "oh I'm not that great" princess that tries to emulate the "Twilight's sister in law that is actually cool to hang out with" archetype and that she isn't all airs and class as that is what the evil Cadence is more about.

Even Luna was getting gutted into this by Twilight though she could use a bit of toning down I do agree. So I think Luna is in the best place. She holds pride and a sense of committing herself to her title. I guess by her current actions she won't be a good princess but she does don the title like a princess should.

It really depends on whose idealism of "princess" you're going on.

The reason the term is even used in this show has more to do with traditional notions tied to princess roles in popular culture, that of the more ladylike figure with more emphasis on the image aspect than on the role itself. For that, I'd say Cadance fits the role, because she was a product of marketing towards this trend. She's pink, emblazoned with symbols of love, and was even introduced in a wedding, all but beating us in with her traditional marketing origins.

However, one thing I really give this show credit for is writing its own definition of princess. Princesses in this show are the highest authority and much of the responsibility and leadership aspects traditionally left to other titles are worked into the princess roles of this show. It's a fitting byproduct of the show's early production, considering Celestia was originally to be titled a queen.

All around, I'd say Twilight really is the best of all aspects the show has touched on. She is a very effective leader and very much upholds the values she is tasked with. In addition, she has the youth that is also traditionally tied with the title, giving her room to learn and grow, and arguably she has made better decisions and shown more of her strength up front than Celestia and Luna have shown in most of the series. Whereas Celestia and Luna need to force in a moment or two to show their humility, it's been built up with Twilight from years of studying and work. In addition, if upholding and symbolizing femininity is a part of the role, the moral of "A Dog and Pony Show" really goes to show her understanding of that. In fact, take any number of Season 1 morals and you can see that Twilight has knowledge of both the practical and social aspects that this show ties to its princess title.

Cadence actually. Celestia is QUEEN like, in that she's incredibly responsible and stately. Cadence seems less statesmanlike and less bound up in the duties or ruling, like how a princess isn't the active ruler of a country.

Luna is the LEAST princess like in that she seems to have zero actual political responsibilities, she just functions more as a resident mage or goddess watching over her domain of dreams and the night. (which is one of the reason I keep pointing out that being a "princess" in this world seems to not require the pony to be suited to government and ruling)
