I think Discord is just one who can never have enough fun and create chaos to meet his desire. Discord is just like Trelane in Star Trek Original Series, a childish powerful being. Both of them are not actually " Evil". They are just psychologically immature.

I think he is more complicated then people think. (theory warning) 

 

I think he is a powerful creature that doesn't seem to understand why people do things, Being(possibly) Immortal he try's to experience new things so he creates events that are beyond normality to see how people react so he can better understand them.

 

being alive potentially since the start of time he would have seen many species live and evolve but then one of them starts acting very differently and they start helping each other and changing the world around them by building houses, roads and tools while coming from miles around to fight and maybe die to protect there own race from harm and despite other powerful being's they flourish in happiness and and come together to beat thing much more powerful creatures.

Remember that scene in American Dad where Roger got weaker to the point of near death because he had to contain his jerkiness, I imagine it should be like that for Discord and chaos. Obviously though MLP would never show that.

Discord just likes to aggravate the crap out of everyone for his own enjoyment. I don't consider him too "evil", just a jerk/troll. He could also just have been bored before meeting the Mane 6. (He's at least as old as Celestia and Luna.) All in all I think he's more immature than evil. If the mane 6 didn't befriend him Equestria would be crap again- or he would just be back to garden ornament mode.
