Frith is Magick 1,471 December 24, 2015 Share December 24, 2015 When you analyze Pony anatomy, the body can be drawn as being based around two circles. In profile, those circles are side by side, but in 3 quarters, the rear circle will be overlapped by the front. This is where it gets tricky because you now have to imagine the circles as spheres when you place the leg joints, but it's easy with a little practice. A useful guide: Keep flyin'
Kafooku 156 December 24, 2015 Share December 24, 2015 Try taking a gander at this tutorial. Unless you already have. But, for me it has been pretty useful when it comes to drawing ponies.

Haven't tried that before. Thanks. I tried three-quarters again... And I did horribly. Again. Here: It's just that I don't get the depth. When I try to do the depth without some sort of sense of what it actually is, derpity derpity derp derp. You can't really get depth in 2D right the first try. I tried drawing a pose, but that was really awkward so I didn't do it. I think I either need to practice, practice, practice, or I'm missing something. You're on the right track, but I think you are taking a short-cut, actually draw out the circles that form the basic shape, then connect them. It looks as if you're trying to simply draw what you would see, but going through every step and working on anatomy, while tedious in the short term, will boost your progress quickly. Try sketching it out on paper with a pencil, then once the concepts and forms come more naturally, imitate the process on the computer. I hope this helps, keep trying. 2 Keep flyin'

That would make sense... if THAT wasn't what I started out with. I'll try the sketch-on-paper thing. EDIT: Paper is wonderful. So yeah. I think I maaaayyyybbbeeeeeee have gotten flat. nope, wait, I always get the ears too long. Frith is Magick 1,471 December 24, 2015 Share December 24, 2015 You seem rushed and possibly frustrated. Slow down to speed up. In the spoiler of my first post in this thread there is a guide. Start by trying to coppy the two forms on the top left. 1 Keep flyin'
Blique 211 December 25, 2015 Share December 25, 2015 I find that the most important part of making a pony face look like canon style is this part here: The eye is at the edge of the face, and the inner side of it connects directly with the nose. Also, note that the eye on the edge is slightly thinner than the other eye (not pictured above, but seen in the guide). If you want perfect circles when starting out, try tracing a coin. Pennies for the two circles in the body, and a quarter for the head (the legs are also a quarter tall). The drawing guide that @@Frith is Magick posted is great. I used it when first learning how to draw the MLP style, and it worked very well. Tip: try and draw one of the sketches in the guide. When you're done, put the guide image on top of your drawing and see what parts are different. Knowing what parts you have right and what parts you need to work on makes learning go a lot faster. Repeat the process until you're able to get the drawing pretty close to the guide without making any big revisions. 2 I make digital art, traditional art, scarves, and crafts. http://mlpforums.com/topic/65309-bliques-ponies/
Lonk Chase 255 December 27, 2015 Author Share December 27, 2015 (edited) I can't believe people are actually typing out advice. Or copy-pasting, it doesn't matter. Thank you very much. It's too late to try today, but maybe tomorrow. Thanks again. You seem rushed and possibly frustrated. Slow down to speed up. In the spoiler of my first post in this thread there is a guide. Start by trying to coppy the two forms on the top left. Yes I am. I go fast on pretty much everything I do, so that's normal for me. alsotypohechhech Here's a thing that I tried to do finding my own style and not sticking by the rules: The first person to guess the reference will get a belated Christmas present. Goodnight everybody. (are you required to say "everypony" to be a brony? just wondering) Edited December 27, 2015 by lonkfania My gaming YouTub: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrLinkfan321 My second YouTub: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaNkpCoSD4MrXGRfuDt5Zjw My Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/id/linksteam Profile picture by me. PacificGreen 1,163 December 27, 2015 Share December 27, 2015 My advice for rounder, smoother shapes is to try to make short, light strokes repeatedly, rather than a few continuous strokes for a hard outline. That way it's easy to erase and you can get a better feel for the pony's anatomy.
