Learn something new! The thousand hour challenge.

My music teacher once told me something I hold very close to my heart. "To be proficient enough in a skill to be of a professional level, you need at least 10,000 hours of practice."

I've always been fairly mediocre with artistic things. I play the cello but I was never the best even with a decent teacher.

Now i'm on my own and have decided to tackle teaching myself the banjo. My family has roots in bluegrass and I love attending all the events, but now I have determined that I need to participate.

SO! while I don't plan on becoming a professional banjo player, I do intend to keep those ten thousand hours in mind. Instead I will be working my way towards a much more tangible one thousand hours of practice with the banjo.

I know that for many of you summer vacation will be beginning soon, I know that it has already started for some, including myself. I can think of no better time than now to begin my journey to reach 1000 hours. I almost pushed 2 hours of practice today and my fingers are sore as can be as I type this

I plan on making a few youtube videos chronicling my progress. Probably 1 every 50 or so hours, or if I just learn something really cool, but I wouldn't make a thread just for that. I want anypony who wants to learn something to give this a shot.

If there is anything you are trying to learn, an instrument, a physical skill, a craft, art, how to sing, anything. I want to see your progress.

I do not expect this thread to fill up in an instant, as that isn't really the nature of what I am asking. But I hope that someday this thread will carry an interesting series of stories of improvement.

I would extend that quote to 10,000 hours of challenging yourself and not simply practicing. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to work on my artistic goals at the moment, but I do have big goals in the future and wish you luck in yours. ^^

Eventually I would love to become highly proficient at drawing/painting, cooking, piano and violin, and computers (coding/graphic design/etc.) I also want to teach myself at least a couple more languages and travel around the world. Though, these are all long, longgg term goals of mine

That's 416 days. That's practicing 3 hours a day for 9 years.

S.V.R. Stop. Violent. Recreation,

I know it's tuff but let's all try to stop playing violent videogames, violent TV, violent thinking, and just violence in general.

I've been writing for 6 years or so at this point, so I dunno what sort of chunk I've taken out of that. probably not much, but even I can see how I've changed since I first began writing. If I ever get around to make MLP fan fictions and get away from Sonic and Naruto, I will definitely add them to my list, and try and document them.

I've started to practice drawing, from references, ponies and hair styles a few times each day (so I can create ponies with gorgeous hair! ) I also want to start learning how to play an acoustic guitar, so I can pull out some nice jazz chords (I guess the piano would really be more appropriate for that...).

Yes it is. That is why it is the professional standard. They really do need to be quite good at what they do to make a profit. Not that crap singing can't be fixed by a coupla computers these days...

Even so, you need a quality microphone and expensive autotune. The autotune you can get for free is hardly usable.

I intend to start writing in the very near future, especially considering it's summer now. I haven't ever formally written a story, but some ideas I have for an MLP fanfic have convinced me to do so. I have a lot of work ahead of me

(edited)

I need to work on my writing skills, actually. My brother's a writer, and it kind of disgusts me that I can't write that well to save my life.

I'm glad to see that this thread wasn't buried instantly =P I've been pickin my fingers off on the banjo lately and I decided to make a progress video already. Warning...I didn't become a godly player in 5 hours. this is just a starting point for future videos to grow off of.
