Is there anyone Spike can really relate to?

Looking at how many friends Starlight has, she feels she can relate to them - that's how she makes her friends. That's how she befriended Trixie and Maud after all! I mean Trixie is very special to Starlight, cause nopony can relate to her quite like her (except maybe Sunset).

It makes me wonder if Spike has someone he can really connect to; someone who shares the same position he does. It seemed to be aiming that path towards Big Mac and Discord, Thorax, and Starlight at first. But it didn't last very long. It seems to be aiming that path towards Stygian as well right now, but knowing the writers...

This is kind of a follow-up to the post I made in the past called "A Brotherly Figure for Spike". There are so many possible interactions he could be making that doesn't happen. Friendship is magic, right? So give Spike a very special friend, and someone who is around often and is there for him reguarly and not busy with their own kingdoms!  I swear, Stygian really fits that position well! It would be great if the writers could see that too, and not have Stygian just being a counterpart for Starlight or the sidekick of Star Swirl. Know what I mean? Other than ending his crush on Rarity, or finding his origins, this is what Spike needs soon.

I never thought about it this way, but it is somewhat strange that Spike doesn't have age-appropriate friends. The way he and the CMC have started to be treated like mini-adults is bizarre to me, and I'd be interested in him having more friends his age. Maybe he could hang out with some of the pony kids who pop up now and then.

I'm somewhat against giving him yet more friendships, however, as that means more characters fighting for screentime and less time for Spike to bounce off of Starlight or the Mane Six or even Trixie. Putting Spike together with the CMC could solve that problem, but I'm not sure their interests would mesh well. Though come to think of it, he could probably use a more sophisticated hobby than eating and sleeping, and the CMC would know a thing or two about that.

I've talked about this before but I do think the show would benefit a lot if he started hanging out with Rainbow Dash more. They had a really nice rapport going in Shadow Play Part 1 and I hope they intended for that little adventure to lay the seeds for more excuses to pair the two together. I've always felt he had the most in common with her of any of the Mane 6 and it was good to see the writers apparently recognize that. 

 

I also think he ought to hang out with the CMCs more; especially Scootaloo and/or Sweetie Belle. There are some potentially very interesting storylines they could run with there relating to Scootaloo's flight abilities combined with Spike's own wing development. And while I don't want Sweetie Belle to be characterized as the one to pick up the pieces after Spike gives up on Rarity, I do think they could make some cute episodes together (though I'm aware the sheer plot synopsis for such an episode would inevitably get the fanfic writers going).
