Celestia and Luna

Ok every pony can someone answer this question for me. So Princess Celestia and Luna were obviously babies and fillies, and now they’re princess that raise the sun and moon. So my question is...who raised the sun and moon before them? If princess cadence is the princess of the crystal empire how did she get over thrown by King Sombra and who ruled it before?

The show doesn't cover this. The comic books & novels Hasbro puts out often go against the show. However, in books (AFAIK), before C & L there was a group of (100?) unicorns that raised the sun & moon but it wore them out & they were (more or less) glad to give the job to the Princesses. Cadence was a Pegasus orphan who managed to reverse a love draining spell cast by a witch & ascended, becoming a Princess. (All Alicorns are automatically Princesses) Not sure why Cadence was put in charge of The Crystal Empire. Could be that she's related to the last royal family. Could be that Celestia said "I've got an Empire with no Princess and a Princess with no Empire. So, they get either her or Blueblood as ruler. Tough call" & so Cadence rules the Empire.

I think the first Hearth's Warming episode revealed that a group of unicorns used to do it.

Cadance wasn't in charge of the Crystal Empire until Celestia sent her there in the S3 premiere. Not quite sure why she was accepted in that position. I'm also not sure she was even alive when King Sombra ruled.

Yes it does. The unicorns moved the sun and moon before Luna and Celestia came around. It was in Hearths Warming Eve.
