general They should bring back D-VHS tapes.

In case you don't know, D-VHS tapes are like VHS tapes, except they carry both SD (480p) and HD (1080p and 720p) content. More yet, a Standard Play D-VHS can hold as much as four hours of content!

Sounds great being able to record everything, they should put HDMI ports on the input and output parts of the box so that I could record, lets say a movie from my TV Box.

I'd want it to remove HDCP copy protection but governments wouldn't want it to annoy the movie companies.

Sounds like an amazing idea to bring it back.

They're really obsolete now, don't you think? Blu Ray is about the same quality and can work in most modern disc drives, so you can just use it in your game console if you have one. Or you can get a (much smaller than a VHS player) Blu Ray player. But now we're slowly moving away from any kind of physical media, and eventually everything will just be online.

You can do this with an output to a capture card and you don't need to keep buying physical tapes. Instead you output from the capture card to your computer. If you want to store a lot, you can get an external storage device so you don't fill up your computer. Then there you go, you have a ton of storage for all your things. Edit: There's also DVR on most modern set-top boxes, though storage can be quite limited.

As quality of movies and TV shows increases, the ability to store it on a disc or tape decreases. Not to mention the space they take up. You can either fill a bookcase with VHS/DVD/etc or you can store it all on a computer.

But we don't even really need to store so much video ourselves at this point, do we? Streaming services like Netflix are likely going to be the future. And yeah, there are problems with that. Things are always disappearing from streaming services. But that's why you'll probably be able to buy a download of anything you truly want to hold on to. Then you don't have to worry about what happens to your favorite movie.

If anything, I see bringing back D-VHS as going backwards. A big clunky box that you have to get up and change and rewind vs a file on your computer or a video streamed online. While the feeling of ownership and being able to hold on to a physical item is great and all, it's just inconvenient and will eventually be completely obsolete.
