I think it's the style they used for The Movie.

IMO, G5 should look like that.

Eh... The movie style was alright in my eyes, I still prefer the G4 show style more though. Just something about the way the ponies are drawn makes them adorable.

It really doesn't matter the style for me, but how that style is executed. For example, I'm typically NOT a fan of 3D CGI versions of traditionally 2D characters. They tend to look awful and even hideous in some cases. Live action Scooby Doo or Rocky and Bullwinkle for some examples, and Disney has made a few major blunders over the years with this even if they were only done as quick channel ID tags or what have you. Even some of the official stuff Hasbro has done just doesn't look right. I can't find a copy of it on youtube unfortunately, but there's a short clip they released on Facebook in the past month or so of E.G. Rainbow Dash showing off her soccer moves. She has the face of a Bratz doll, and it just felt empty and mechanical to the point that even her personality wasn't shining through. On the other hand, some of the things I've seen done by fans on no budget using SFM, have pulled me into the experience just as easily as the official show. SFM has a few technical issues (probably a whole new physics engine would be needed to get manes to move realistically in 3D but also not betraying how they move in the show), but the characters still "feel" authentic and my brain has no problem accepting them as who they're supposed to be.
