Scoot-scootaloo 11 June 3, 2012 Share June 3, 2012 Okay, so I have probably mentioned this before to some of you but I have a question for you guys. Have you ever really looked at the muffins in cartoons. Because in all the ones I have seen they look Really strange right please tell me I am not the only one who thinks so because, I mean, come on they are always either oval/circles on a rectangle/square or they are a weird puffy, curly, thing on a random shape with 4 sides. the sides are almost always concave or something. there is ALWAYS something WRONG with the muffins! I hope I am not alone in this. examples: Invader Zim, Dexters lab, My little pony friendship is magic. I love the examples but the muffins just look so weird! Aureity 3,055 June 3, 2012 Share June 3, 2012 "Oval on a rectangle"? Looks about right to me. But Derpy makes the muffins, so that explains any strageness about them. A lil' Catherine <(^.^)>

Aureity 3,055 June 3, 2012 Share June 3, 2012 okay that one only looks fine because that is not animated that is an image taken by a person and posted on the internet. Exactly. It's a real-life muffin. And it looks exactly like the cartoon oval/rectangle muffins your describe. So maybe they aren't that inaccurate, eh? Clover Heart 978 June 3, 2012 Share June 3, 2012 (edited) It's a cartoon, and when you get right down it it, it's simply drawn. The more simple you get with your cartoons, the more obvious you have to get with your drawings. Something very realistic could afford to do something more rounded-looking. However, with a simple cartoon, we're taking the basic elements of the thing and putting them into the drawing so that they're understandable for viewers. It's that trapezoid shape because the part of the muffin that's covered in paper usually is wider at the top than it is at the bottom. This depends on what kind of muffin tin you use, but most tins go in at an angle, not straight down. Also, we're viewing it from the side. So, this is where a decision needs to be made. It's a simple cartoon. Do we curve it at the bottom, because the muffin is round, or do we make it flat for the simplicity? It could go either way, depending on the style of the cartoon. But in MLP's style, everything's very to-the-point, streamlined kind of style, so I think the flat bottom is more consistent with the style. Also, a flat bottom allows you to set the muffins down without having to change their shape any. Simply put, it's just easier. Then there's the fluffy top. Do most muffins take that fluffy, curly shape? No. However, again, we're trying to convey this in a simple way. Muffins are supposed to be fluffy, in spite of the fact that when they're baked, the tops turn out more dome-shaped. Rather than going for the realistic option, they've gone for a cartoony option. This is a simple way to convey that it's something fluffy. Beyond all that, if you draw the basic outline of a real muffin, and don't add much detail (just trying to outline it in straight lines) it doesn't look very muffiny. However, the fluffy, curly blob on top of a trapezoid is something we've kind of agreed on to be a muffin. So the animators took that idea, rather than opting for something that would be more realistic, in theory, but clash with the style, and possibly not even recognizable as a cartoon muffin. And speaking of cartoons, they rarely ever -do- look like the thing they're representing. Think, trees, clouds, houses, even human beings. Even the ponies of MLP:FiM don't look like real ponies. It's a cartoon. You're using simple pictures and symbols to convery something. And as long as your audience gets it, there's no problem with that. We're not going for photo-realism. We're going for basic drawings so the audience can see what we're getting at. And as far as that all goes, I feel that MLP's muffins look like muffins. I've never been confused on that. I mean yeah its a cartoon so Its harder to get down a muffin, but then why is it so easy to get down a frosting less cupcake?!?!

I'll overlook the fact that muffins and cupcakes have a bigger difference than just frosting. In this case, the frosting is the key. The frosting is signifying to us that this thing is a cupcake, so it doesn't need to rely on the weird shape. You're the most basic of jokes.
