I'm extremely disappointed

I'd just shrug it off. Parents are in this case just your avarge hater, only dumber. Not that your parents are dumb, they just know less about the internet and the weird people that dwell within it. It's a natural reaction really. People are afraid of things they don't understand. And believe me, especially for older people (no I'm not implying your parents are old people), an adult liking a show for 5 year old girls is really hard to understand.

Yeah, exactly, that is why I’m so patient with them. They have no idea about the Internet culture I suppose. So, I just kind of held my tongue and just let them say what that wanted to say.

That really sucks, man. Have they ever seen the show for themselves? I'm sure their opinions would be different if they did.

I think the hardest part is getting people to actually watch the show.

Haha fat chance of them doing that :P They said flat out they don’t want to know.

This is an example of hasty generalizations. Your parents are wrong about pedophiles watching the show. The show just appeals to us.

That's the good thing about being born to a mother that's already raised to extremely rebellious kids, she's pretty much in "nothing surprises and this point" mode on most things.

That, and I'm 20 so she stays off my back to a certain point.

it amuses me that parents like to jump right to that "all pedophiles" argument, while at the same time very clearly excluding their own child from that stereotype.

"well...you're obviously not a pedophile, and you watch the show, so....why are you hanging out with pedophiles who watch the show?"

I just can't fathom how people can assume that their (in these cases many times, their adult) children do not have the sense in their head to decide if a show is good or not. I hate to say it, but...it sounds to me like some of your parents think you're idiots who have no idea how to form a real opinion.

My parents certainly don't always agree with me, but at least they have the decency to believe that I feel certain ways about things...sheesh.

Well that stinks, I'm sorry to hear that bro. I know that I for one am very thankful that my mom's actually become pretty understanding about it; I even mentioned that Season 3 is coming out this week recently to her in a phone call, and she was excited for me! :) Maybe just give them some time to come around, and maybe every once in awhile show 'em something like a meme pic, something really harmless that doesn't have much connection to the show itself. Then again, you could just leave the matter be as well; I wouldn't presume to know your parents better than you do. Whatever happens, I hope it ends up well, and that your parents maybe come around eventually and accept that watching the show ain't such a bad thing. Best of luck! :D

Apparently I'm a, "Furry emo faggot that goes to raves and does drugs at them and listens to weird music." According to my family, that is, all because they saw a pony background on my online alarm clock.

My family is basically shit.

Anyway, I always just disregard what non-sense they say, and I suggest you do, too.

Because at the end of the day, do you really want to interact with people on a more than basic level that cannot get past something so trivial as common gender practices? I sure as hell don't and you shouldn't either. And I mean this to all my fellow kin,

Stay strong, and may no ignorant, pathetic, closed-minded, opinionated, horrible excuse for a human being get to your head and try to belittle you for you enjoying and being apart of a great fandom and show.

  • 1 month later...

here is my version of how that exact thing went i told my mom she said cool i told her she should watch it because she was moving to another state and so she did she watched them all and so did my dad a exmilitary man and he is not the most caring and sharing person but is really kind hearted so take of that what you will but they both love it so in the end it really depends on how open minded they really are just tell them not to listen to rumors to be leave you as their child it isn't like that just say it is like any other fanbase like doctor who or star trek fans give them a comparison of like sesame street to avenue q with out how dirt of avenue q but just as entertianing and fun

I feel that this quote is appropriate for this thread, and this fandom:

""The next real literary “rebels” in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of anti-rebels, born oglers who dare somehow to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse and instantiate single-entendre principles. Who treat of plain old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and hip fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Dead on the page. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that’ll be the point. Maybe that’s why they’ll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. Today’s risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the “Oh how banal.” To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows?”"
