There are at least 2 episodes in which there aren't as many singers as there are characters singing!

 

Unless of course there is someone I'm missing or misinterpretating, this episodes are The Crystal Empire and One Bad Apple.

 

In The Crystal Empire, in both The Ballad of the Crystal Empire and The Success Song, all mane 6 are singing...when we know that Ashleigh Ball is not only the VA of Rainbow Dash and Applejack, but also sings for them...

 

And in One Bad Apple, all CMC are singing in Babs Seed, Bad Seed, when we know that Michelle Creber, the VA for Applebloom, sings for both AB AND Sweetie Belle...

I remember hearing that for the longer songs someone other than Andrea Libman sings for Pinkie, although I think she always sings for Fluttershy. I could be wrong though.

You're right!  As for your question, it seems Andrea (you spelled her last name correctly) only sang in few occasions for Pinkie, but normally it's Shannon Chan-Kent who sings for Pinkie Pie. However, it DOES seem that she sings for Fluttershy, but I can't confirm this yet.

She does indeed sing for Fluttershy. Apparently her voice was too "blues-y" or something for Pinkie though. Andrea does sing some short Pinkie songs if Shannon isn't available, I believe. 

 

Tara Strong can sing really well, she just can't sing and record with the other VAs as she lives in California. I think Claire Corlette just simply can't sing good enough for a pony who's talent is implied to be singing. I'm not sure why Tabitha doesn't sing for Rarity. 

 

Heck, I even saw a Barbie movie where Ashleigh Ball played a popstar, yet she didn't even sing her own songs, and Ashleigh is an amazing singer. What was funny though is that the person who did Ashleigh's character's singing voice didn't sound a thing like Ashleigh, and was also a horrible singer in my opinion compared to Ashleigh. I guess that's how the voice acting business works.

For two or more characters that have same singing voice actor, I assume they record once where the actor voices their one character, and then another time with the same actor using their voice for the other. Same goes for regular dialogue. I mean, it's a television show, they can do as many re-recordings as they want.

Huh...thanks for the info!  And for some reason, the voice of Andrea being too blues-y seems plausible to me, because she tends to use her soft voice more normally than her bubbly voice.

 

Huh...I didn't know Tara and Tabitha could sing well as well...and I can understand the reason under Claire not singing for Sweetie Belle. As for Tabitha not singing, maybe she doesn't feel confident enough to sing or something similar even if she DOES sing well.

 

And is it me, or Ashleigh's characters tend to have less singing participation than others when ironically she's probably the only proffesional singer of the main VA's?

 

Also, I think DHX and Hasbro hit jackpot after jackpot by getting so many VA's that can sing well enough and almost not need to get other proffesional singers AND that can do more than one voice.
