Here's a potentially unsettling take on all of this: if AJ died today, who would fill her horseshoes in the Mane 6?  Big Mac?  I think not.  I think if that (admittedly unlikely) scenario came to pass, AB would be forced to grow up fast, just as her sister did in years past when her own inspirational figures met an early end.
