Haha, yeah they are super hard to find.

I got lucky at Bronycon when I bought 10 packs and one of them contained a Gold Twilight Sparkle. The more I think about it, the more lucky I realized that I was.

Did you get a box of cards? Because the villains are box toppers only, so you can only get them either in one of the boxes, from Toywiz, or on eBay. I got all 4 of mine off eBay from a seller who was selling all 4 of them for $30. He is still selling them, but for $40 each now instead. Still worth it - getting them individually off Toywiz will probably cost at least $80 if I remember correctly.

Celestia and Cadance I bought off eBay.

Luna I FINALLY bought off Toywiz, where she only cost $25 (compared to before when she cost $50), and then used my 20% discount on December 15 when they were having that promotion. Worth it.

So yeah, if you want them that badly, don't waste your money by getting a million packs of cards. If you do it that way, you are gonna end up with a trillion duplicates and no gold cards. Believe me, I know. I have tried getting gold cards through packs and have failed miserably ever since Bronycon. Getting them off eBay will cost more in the short run, but if you want them badly enough, they are worth the investment.

HOWEVER, you really need to make sure that you are not paying a million dollars for a card. I set my limit to $30 per card for the gold ones. Celestia cost the most for me (she was more like $40), but since I only spent $30 on four of the cards, and one of them was in a $2 pack, I figured that it was OK to spend a little bit more for a card.

I have also found that bidding on gold cards is near-impossible and super frustration. Go with Buy It Now options if their prices are reasonable.
