I'm not sure if people are taking this as seriously as they should be.  Let's take a closer look.

The most obvious stylistic choice seen here is to represent Twilight the way a child would.  We all know that Twilight is above and beyond her friends in terms of intelligence,  and this childlike depiction reflects how she often feels as though she's trapped in a child's world.  Her friends' ignorance makes them mere playthings for her, as she strolls through the world of the unenlightened.  However, there's more.  Look at her mane; her bangs are unusually messy.  Messy enough, even, to suggest symbolism through exaggeration.  Her mane is the looking glass through which we can observe her life: messy, fragmented, tortured.  Her obsessive compulsive nature would simply not allow such an error unless it were overshadowed by a far more grave error: the error of her own existence.  Look at her face.  A blank expression, sure, but perhaps too blank.  Does Twilight dare feign ignorance of her own inner demons?  What's depicted here isn't a lack of emotion, but a mask.  A mask that she puts on every day as she struggles to enjoy time with her "friends."  She's a pony with two faces, further symbolized by the bichromatic brush strokes.  When you look at this drawing, you are looking at a pony who is long dead on the inside.

In short, this is the most important piece of art the fandom has ever produced.

Thank you.

That's really all there is to say on the matter.
