Hello Everypony, and a bit about a possible fanimation.

So I'm one of the older types of bronies. 35 to be exact. XD Either I'm crazy or this show is just really damn well done. I am a technician and do-everything guy by day and by night I work on games and just very recently started to study character design and get back on track with my original life's dream which was to be an animator. I decided since age 5 I wanted to be an animator. I ended up going to an art college which was to serve as a stepping stone to animation school. However, life got in the way and for a while the dream had slipped away. But that flame never died and Faust inspired me to try my hand at it one final time. I have a lot to learn yet and a lot to relearn.

 

I don't know if I'll pursue animation as a profession at this point, but I would still like to make some works in my lifetime. I'm working with a friend on a script of a web series we want to do, and I have a concept of my own in mind as well. However, practice-wise, I think making a fan animation might teach me a lot. 

 

So I sort of penned a love story based on 2 run of the mill OC ponies who end up finding their own destinies by finally accepting who they are. One is based on my own personality and thus shares my nick. I've never been clear on whether this sort of thing is frowned upon in the fandom (basing characters off yourself), but the story is not really about being a hero. Rather it's simply about accepting oneself and about learning to take risks. It does end up involving Canterlott, Ponyville, royalty and some of the Mane Six. 

 

Being that I'm thinking of it as a practice animation, I was thinking about doing a mock movie trailer. The whole thing might not be longer than 3 min at most. 

 

Within a month or 2 I should have an animatic at least. I will need to scout for voices and music. I will however, prove first that I can at least animate well enough before actually looking for any aid on the project.

 

Also, would a fanimation that was just a mock movie trailer be interesting enough to watch? I just want to make sure this is worth my time. I have no guarantees on how long it would take me. I have a busy life, lots of plans for this year (including backpacking for a whole month) and 2 game projects on the go.

An animation, even just a trailer sounds really cool! I know I would definitely watch it. I think it's cool that you're getting back into doing something you love, even if it's not to make a living. 

 

As for the OC thing, it's actually pretty common for people to make "ponysonas" of themselves. It all up to you on that.

I think people only mind ponysonas if you make them a "Mary Sue," or someone who is ridiculously good in a certain way (such as the most powerful alicorn ever, loved by everyone, etc.), which is a mixture of boastful and silly looking. Stay clear of that, and you're fine.

I'm heading in the same direction from a different road-- I'm a tv editor currently working into reality slowly peddling my contacts into some animation editing. It kinda is in a way. Like when Dash manages to do a sonic rainboom. Snow happens to be one of few Pegasi that are strong fliers and able to withstand very harsh weather conditions. He's not the only one however. It's also a give and take. Everything has a balance. Where he is superior with one ability, he is inferior with another. He's a strong flyer who can instantly accelerate, but he's a slow flyer. He'd never even come close to half the speed that Dash could fly at. Not to spoil anything but he gets picked to be one of a few who have a special and dangerous task on weather teams. There are other things he has difficulties with that others take for granted.

 

The other character (who is not based on me) overcomes her fear and actually does end up doing something heroic.

 

They both have strong qualities in certain areas, just like everyone and end up helping each other, where the other is having difficulties.

 

So, I guess in a way, this story will be personal. I'm no different than anyone else in my struggles in life, but this story does have some reflections of me. There is a reason my nick is Snow. Despite being a badass nick XD, the main reason is a sad and mostly uninteresting one (so don't ask XD).

 

And, I dunno *spoiler*, I'd like it to be a lesson on I guess being true to yourself. Honor the actual show by the fan animation teaching a lesson as well.

Well just having a character who's really good at something doesn't make them a Mary Sue. In fact, I didn't word my original response very well. TV Tropes, which my smart self looked at after making that post, summarizes it better:

Your character definitely doesn't sound completely OP and flawless for the purpose of author "wish fulfillment," so I think you're fine. BTW, I'm all for fan animations staying true to the show, and I hope your animation goes well!
