What Is So Special About The Wonderbolts?

I am not trying to start any wars here, but I do have to wonder: what makes the Wonderbolts so, well, wonderful?

 

For as long as the show has been running, we really haven't seen them do anything significant. They tried to stop Spike but that had them get stuck under a bucket on the side of the mountain. They are said to be awesome precision flyers, but I really haven't seen them do anything that RD can't do just a s good if not better....

Well, let's be honest here. The Wonderbolts are show ponies, and that's about it -- at least in the context of the show. They are effectively on the level of Trixie, except they are revered instead of ... well.... disliked. In my imagination, I considered the possibility that there is a combat arm of the Wonderbolts that just hasn't been shown. In fact, this was the basis for my OC, but that doesn't really have a place in the show. Really, they are a lot like Shining Armor is to Twilight Sparkle: the means for a main character to ascend, a plot device. Beyond that, we're in fan land.

The Wonderbolts haven't done a lot on the show, true, but it's implied that they are, indeed, the best precision fliers in Equestrian, put on great performances, and are pretty much the Air Force of Equestria. Sure, Rainbow Dash appears to be much better than the Wonderbolts, but she's also a mane character and gets a lot more screen time than the Wonderbolts do, therefore letting her abilities shine through more often. When it comes to Spike, they did indeed try to stop him and got stuck in a giant metal sarcophagus, but it's not like Rainbow Dash or anypony else did much more than they did. Plus, Spike's a dragon, and it's been shown that full grown dragons are pretty deadly.

 

Overall, the lesson we get from this all is: Owlowiscious is a better dragon fighter than the Wonderbolts.

Well, according to the MLP Wiki, they were parodied off of The Blue Angels. You are right that they need some screen time and all we've heard about them is Rainbow Dash wanting to join. In Season 3, she accomplished half of her dream, but we still need the other half. 

 

In case you forgot, in the episode "Sweet and Elite", there was an event known as the "Wonderbolts Derby", or a race between random Wonderbolts, in which a Wonderbolt named Fleetfoot won the race.

They are like the Air Force, and even though they are show ponies but mainly Pegasus that show off mostly, they are still beloved by all. Everyone that is a great flyer wants to be like them, and that is why in Wonderbolts Academy we had a lot of pegasus ponies that were ready to tryout to be in the Wonderbolts. They are pretty popular and well known as the best flyers in all of Equestria.

The Wonderbolts aren't given so much screen time, considering they're not especially as important as the Mane 6. For all we know during the course of the episodes not featuring them they could've been training or away at some other Equestrian province doing a show. Besides, they are showponies at heart (and apparently they are also the Equestrian Air Force) so that only adds to their absence during the show.

I heard that The WonderBolts are more like the blue angels. The Wonderbolts are an elite group of flyers that perform stunts and aerobatics and are very well known/popular in Equestria.

I suppose the screentime thing is fair. I just haven't really been impressed by them from what I have seen so far. It just seems obvious that RD is a better flyer than the Wonderbolts.
