Okay horses are never shown to actually live in Equestia, instead coming from a foriegn country. But there has to be some interaction between the citizens of Equestia and the horses because of mules. The only way to get a mule is male donkey+female horse. This shows that either a few horses live in Equestria, or that the mules have come from this other country

Ponies are horses, dude. Like no lie, they're the same species, just a different breed.  It's kinda like how a dachshund and a Great Dane are the same species, but are different.

Well, ponies are horses. It's just that I guess Hasbro assumed that "horse" was a ugly word (( Which it is. )) and didn't want to say, "My Little Horse." But, Twilight mentioned in the "Best Night Ever" episode about "We won't have any horses that can pull us to the gala!" I'm guessing they use it like we humans do... pull stuff.

Um, love. Excuse me, but I gotta point something out here. Ponies are horses.  It's just like what DJ Professor K said. They are the same species, just different breeds.  ._.
