Cactus 155 July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 This is something I've been fumbling with for a while now. It's preventing me from getting any work done of my character since I don't know what her cutie mark should me, and I really like commissioning art of my characters, even though I'm only planning on having a single one for MLP. She's a 'sona. I love writing and storytelling, but I think the traditional quill/parchment/ink for characters like that are too overused. How can I symbolically reflect my love for storytelling in another way? I would be highly appreciative of any sort of help. (I don't really have a name for her either, but I was planning to decide on that after I get a cutie mark in mind.)
Taviscratch 453 July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 How about a campfire? It's a little unorthodox for implying storytelling but most great legends started as campfire stories told by weary travelers as they met along the roads and settled down to camp together for then night before they part ways in the morning and pass on each others stories to the next travelers they meet. A campfire represents the origin of the oral tradition of storytelling. Alternatively you could have a lute or a lyre as bards turned these campfire stories into epic poems with rhyme which would help people remember them before they were committed to paper and, therefore, history. How many great legends have been lost to the sands of time, slowly fading from human memory? So anyway, that's all I got Sig by [member=~TheGammy~]
Cactus 155 July 25, 2013 Author Share July 25, 2013 I don't want to copy a significant character and go for a lyre, and I'm not sure about a campfire. A lute is a possibility. I'd have to make it less music-y, though.
Gizzbone 6 July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 What about reading glasses on top of a book? That would be interesting and would show that other people read your stories or that your stories are read.
Blique 211 July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 Do you have a specific genre you specialize in? For examply, if fantasy, you can use a castle. Along those lines, a pen crossed with a sword would look nice. Maybe a landscape type for creating new worlds. Other than that, you can use a mask to represent storytelling in the form of script and theater. Or speech bubbles/text boxes for the form of comics (that's what my ponysona has). You could also go abstract, using flowing lines to symbolize the flow of a story. Or you could use the MS Word logo, or whatever program you use to write. You could also pick your favorite novel/story and pull a symbol from there; it wouldn't directly reference your storytelling ability, but a love for literature typically indicates a skill for writing as well. I make digital art, traditional art, scarves, and crafts. http://mlpforums.com/topic/65309-bliques-ponies/
Colt 555 July 25, 2013 Share July 25, 2013 Well its hard to picture a relation to writing without using the common symbols of it. As iconography writing is related to quills Ink and letters, for an MLP universe this is reduced as their writing is still a mystery for us so we would have to keep the letters out of the way. So lets make in our minds what icons we relate to writing: Quills, paper, notes, ink, books, typewriters, pens, scrolls and... well that's it at least for me. So we have elemets we can use the Books could be one nice but to be fair I think the Ink is our best bet here. Lets be honest ink can be whatever you want, like or wish so using this and the idea you shared with us about your character here is my sugestion: A tilted Ink Jar that its letting the ink out, from it the Ink is making the shape of a cloud that has some lines in it, using a "negative style" the ink is the paper and the paper is the ink. With this you can show how your character uses the ink to write about dreams and imagination in general. Also if you could share us the name of the OC it would help as normaly CM's go with the name of the pony OC's - Colt the Strahl | Earth Miracle | Tales of a Milennium - FanFic Proyect | Excuse my english
