"And if you left now, you'd miss Hearth's Warming, it's been a big push but I've convinced Princess Celestia to let us host the pageant for this year." Twilight said. "The new theater will be done tomorrow, so I'm told anyway."

"It doesn't matter to me, just as long as you come back." Dash said.

Stephan sighed. If he chose to leave now, he'd miss so many great things; he'd probably miss Missy waking up and he knew for sure that he'd miss Hearth's Warming if he left now. Though, it was almost Christmas on Earth. No way he wanted to miss that. The stallion let out a "Hmmm..." and thought for a moment.

Dash had to be decisive at that moment, Stephan couldn't sacrifice a chance to spend time with his own family.
"Stephan, go and see your family, spend Hearth's Warming with them,  and I'll spend it with my family here, in Ponyville, I'll still be here, waiting for you when you get back."

Stephan heard what Dash said and turned to her.

"Really, Dash? You wouldn't mind?" A giant smile came across his face and he hugged Rainbow Dash. "Oh, thank you, Dash. I love you." He said to her from his heart. "I'll come back after I celebrate the holidays with my dad. I promise you of that."

Dash smiled and kissed him, this time on the lips. "Okay, we should get going, we'll see you tomorrow Twilight." Dash sadi.
"Okay, be careful out there, Ponyville isn't safe at night anymore." Twilight said.

"We will Twilight, don't worry about us." Dash said.

"I'm a mother at heart, I worry." Twilight said, smiling. "You wouldn't want to swing by the library for a bit would you? I need an escort and there aren't any guards."

"I guess I could take you over there real quick." The three ponies began to walk out of town hall and to the library. The town of Ponyville seemed surprisingly peaceful tonight. It only made Stephan all the more cautious. Eventually, the group arrived at the library, where Stephan dropped Twilight off. "Anything else you need...Mayor Sparkle?" He asked her.

"No thank you, I'm glad to see you two together again, I know that...." Twilight began but stopped. "Oh, I shouldn't tell you about that. Well, see you tomorrow." Twilight closed the door and walked inside, the library felt empty, she had only just realised it, but without work, she was just lonely.

 

"So, what do you want to do now?" Dash asked. "I think we should go back to your house and you can hold me in your arms until I fall asleep, what do you think?" Dash said, half-hoping that he would think she was joking.

Stephan's eyebrows raised.

"C'mon, Dash. You know me. Sitting at home is the last thing anypony expects me to be doing ." He said in a joking matter. "We came out here because you didn't want to end up falling asleep. C'mon, let's go find something. Unless you've changed your mind."

"Alright, I think we should just go for a walk, give us time to talk about stuff." Dash said.  "I want you to stay here in Equestria with me, but I don't want to keep you from your family. It's cold out, so we should go somewhere indoors, I don't like winter, pegasus wings are more sensitive to cold than you'd think."

"Well, then I guess we really don't have much of a choice but to return to my place, huh?" He said. The two began walking back to Stephan's house. The house was a bit of ways away, so Stephan shared the heat of his jacket with Rainbow Dash. "Y'know, when Twilight was going inside her house, she was about to say something about you and I, but she just stopped in mid-sentence." He said. "What do you think she was going to say?"

"Well, last time we dated, I might not have seemed that invested in our relationship, but I was a teenager, I was lazy." Dash said. "Anyway, when you told me you didn't think we should see each other anymore, I felt depressed for a few weeks and over that time I didn't speak to anypony, I stayed with Twilight and she promised me not to tell anypony about it."

A sense of guilt spiked Stephan as if he was just punched in the stomach. He didn't mean to hurt Rainbow Dash THAT much. He let her down as gently as he possibly could've.

"I... I'm so sorry, Dash. I didn't mean to hurt you that much inside. I never had." He said to her.

"Don't worry about it Stephan, we've got a good thing going now, now we're both older and we're more open to relationships and to each other." Dash said. "It might have hurt sure, but I knew I couldn't be mad at you, or I'd risk losing you as a friend forever, and that's the last thing I wanted." Dash smiled and kissed him.

 

-Back then-

 

It was about 9 at night, Twilight had just put Missy to bed, so she was in bed herself. But she heard a knock at the door, or more like a faint tapping. She slowly got out of bed to avoid waking the sleeping filly and walked to the door and opened it.

"Rainbow? What are you doing here?" She asked before noticing that she'd been crying. "Rainbow, what's wrong?"
"He.....broke up with me." Dash said. Twilight gasped and let her in.

"Try to be quiet, I just put Missy in bed." Twilight said to her as she walked in.

 

-an hour later-

 

Dash was sleeping in a bed in the basement after an hour of trying to convince her to go to bed.

"Mum? Why was Aunt Rainbow crying?" Missy asked.

"Well, she's having some issues, you'll understand some day, but for now, maybe it's best to give her some space.

Stephan blushed a little bit. It looks like the past really was behind them after all.

"Alright, we're here. Let's go inside and I'll turn on the heater." Stephan and Dash then walked into the house.

 

-Flashback-

 

Stephan was walking home with his head hung. He knew that he had hurt Rainbow's feelings back at the park, and he felt like a monster for doing so. He entered his home and sat down.

"Hey, dude, what's up?" He asked. "Did something happen?"
Stephan sighed. "I did I, Light. I let her down as gently as I could, but she was still upset. I'll never be able to approach her again..."
"Don't worry, bud. Just give Dash some time. I'm sure she'll get over it in time." Light responded prior to heading into the kitchen and making some supper.

"Oooh, it's so good to get inside out of the cold." Dash said as she sat down on one of Stephan's chairs. "I really mean it though, the past is the past, and I don't blame you for it, teenage me wasn't exactly very charming was she?"

 

"Aunt Rainbow, are you OK?" Missy asked, she had sat down next to Dash and looked rather concerned. Dash didn't respond, she hadn't spoken for the past week. 

"Come on now, Missy, you know Aunt Rainbow doesn't want to talk to anypony." Twilight said.
"Sorry." Missy said, but Dash gave her a slight smile, to show her everything was alright, but it wasn't.

"Well, I wasn't exactly prince charming myself, was I?" Stephan asked in a joking matter. "I'm just glad we're starting over. Now that we're older, we're wiser. So, we'll start again wiser."

 

Stephan was lying on his bed, simply staring at the poster hanging on the ceiling. Ever since he broke up with Dash, he wondered how the teenage mare was doing. Did he really hurt her feelings enough for her to consider committing... no. Why would he even consider thinking of that? That's a terrible thought... but it was a thought that was quite possible...

"Yeah, you were a bit of a.....yeah, you were kinda full of yourself back then." Dash said, kicking back a bit, but then again, so was she. 

 

It had been almost a month since then, Twilight had finally convinced her to leave the house.

"Come on Rainbow, you can't just stay inside all the time." Twilight said, as usual Rainbow didn't respond.

She then waited outside Sugarcube Corner, since Twilight was doing something in there.

 

"But you doing that was a really big push for me, after that, I trained harder than I ever had, and I joined the Wonderbolts." Dash said. "So, in a way, I should thank you."

Stephan smiled and shrugged.

"I do what I can." He responded in a joking matter. "Yeah, I guess I used to think I was all that in the past, didn't I? And, speaking of the Wonderbolts, how did that go for you. Ponies tell me it didn't really go as you wanted it to."

 

A month had passed, and Stephan was out in the Spring weather of Equestria running around. That day, he decided to check on Rainbow Dash and see if she was okay. He used his the trees to jump up to her floating house and knocked on her door. No answer.

"No, it was fun and all, but it really wasn't what I expected it to be, I guess I expected too much from it and nothing could ever live up to them." Dash said. "I was in the Wonderblots for about 3 years, and then....I got bored."

 

Dash hadn't said anything to anypony for a month, she looked uncomfortable, just in case she met Stephan around town.

"I actually never really liked the Wonderbolts, to be frank." Stephan said. "I've always wanted to race the Wonderbolts so I can put them in their place. If they got beaten by an earth pony, could you imagine how humiliating that'd be for them?"

Stephan waited at the door for a few minutes in hopes of an answer at the door. Nopony came. He began to worry about  Dash. She couldn't have... no, she's not like that. She couldn't be suicidal. He jumped back to the ground and began running around town, searching for Dash.

"They're really high and mighty, I don't know why I even wanted to join them in the first place, I guess it's all just because of the flashy stunts and tricks, but none of them could dream of going as fast as me." Dash said. "Left them all in the clouds."

 

Dash could hear hoofsteps in the distance, rapid hoofsteps, so she hid behind a cart that was nearby.

Grand thought for a moment. "Well, I suppose lieing. I'm not the most honest pony sometimes, but I try my best" she said, shivering a bit. "And, well... Not leaving. It seems silly, but it's something that I just can't imagine dealing with. It's why I understand how angry Caramel is"

"Which is exactly why I want to show them up." Stephan commented. "Being beaten by another pegasus is one thing, but being beaten by a pony that's stuck to the ground will soil their name for a long time to come."

 

Stephan ran past the wagon that Dash was hiding in. However, while he was running, he could've sworn that he saw a rainbow-colored mane hiding in it. He walked back to the wagon and tried to search.
