Actually... Ink Rose kinda has a nice theory about different alicorn types in her response to Tommy Oliver... I think she puts it as... Natural and artificial alicorns... Basically alicorns born as they are and alicorns created artificially... It explains why Luna and celestia don't seem to age but Cadance clearly does since when twilight is a filly Cadance is almost portrayed as a teenager...

I made a thread about pony genetics very recently: http://mlpforums.com/topic/84973-i-think-i-figured-out-the-alleles-for-unicornpegasus-and-earth-ponies/?view=findpost&p=2205862

Judging by that (very very verrrrry basic) data, it is technically possible but if we take into account multiple alleles, chromosomes, and/or environmental conditions (all or none of those things can play a part in alicorn offspring) It would most likely not be possible for non alicorn parents to produce alicorn offspring and if it is, the chances are 1 in a million.

I personally believe that is it beyond possible to be born an alicorn from non-alicorns. Really, being an alicorn is literally a metaphor for becoming royalty. All high royalty in Equestria are shown to be alicorns, for example. Cadence, Celestia, and even Twilight Sparkle as of the end of season three. Speaking of the season 3 finale, Twilight is shown to be turned from unicorn to alicorn literally within mere minutes, this is my last piece of evidence proving being an alicorn is merely a physical title.

I like to think of these things in a scientific way and not a "message or symbolic" type way. Science is always the answer!

Ok so lets take Luna and Tia

are born as Alicorns and all DNA

wise and such but what about Twilight and Cadence?

Does it when they changed/transformed that

their DNA was rewrote to that of a Alicorn

and such or just tweaked? In looking at

the Cakes with their twins being a unicorn

and a Pegasuses DNA wise which means perhaps

both the Cakes have or carry the laden DNA

of a unicorn and Pegasus in their genes and

boom: you get the twins.

Than maybe Twilight and Cadence could

have been the same in carrying laden dna of

say a unicorn or Pegasus and when they Changed,

it was brought out by use of Magic? A rewrote of

the code.....

/breaks brain but goes to do research on DNA/

/this was wrote of the top of my head..../

I think it could be possible, in a land of magical talking ponies I have to concede to that automatically, but could you imagine the amount of pressure on the poor kid born an alicorn?  With all that surrounds what being an alicorn means I would feel kind of bad for the kid.

Because he or she would be considered an out cast?

Not an outcast, but set apart.  While most ponies get to discover who they will get to be a pony born an alicorn would have a defined destiny from birth.  That would have to be rough, having the feeling of choice removed, and no one who could relate.

Why is that?

You mean like to become royalty err something?

Kind of, having to be put in a spot where you know know you are supposed to be a great ruler, and always having to aspire to that without having much of a say in the matter.  Destiny or not, each pony feels that they earn their particular niche within their community, and while an natural born alicorn will still have the joy of discovering their cutie mark, they will never truly know why they were born an alicorn. What will they have to do to deserve it?

Let's take it scientific shall we?

According to general science knowledge, a horse has 64 chromosomes. That's 32 pairs. Now, let's say that pairs 30 and 31 were responsible for wings and horn. If there was a trisomy (3 chromosomes in one pair) in pair 30, the offspring would be a pegasus. If there was a trisomy in pair 31, the offspring would be a unicorn. The #1 rule is, the father is always the dominant species. However, when the genes are mixed during conception, a mutation could arise that results in a trisomy in both pairs 30 and 31, thus resulting in an alicorn offspring. This is extremely rare though.

But how are we to know if a horse/pony, pegasus, unicorn and, alicorn's DNA is all the same?

Woulden't there be slight differences so that each can be born with a unicorn horn and or wings?

That's why there's the trisomy. There will be none in the earth pony and all of the individual acids in the DNA ladder will be arranged differently.
