InvaderShy 18 August 21, 2013 Share August 21, 2013 (edited) Do you think the ponies of Equestria are in the same contemporaneity than us, the human beings, in the 2010's decade? or, do you think they are in the medieval times yet? Of course, I'm aware about the presence of some gadgets, machines, even a railroad system in the series. But I want to know your point of view. GhostPony750 959 August 21, 2013 Share August 21, 2013 I think they are at the end of 1800, without any industrialisation, and with a monarchy. They don't have electricity, don't have phones, still write with quills, the ponies play outside and socialise instead of being stuck on a computer. Awesome life actually.
Klick-Klack 299 August 21, 2013 Share August 21, 2013 I think its hard to make any comparisson between the two worlds, the ponies (well, a portion of them) are physically capable of wielding magic, so the demands for things like engines and/or electricity would be lower. Plus, most of our high-tech is a result of war, things like radar, ballistics and so-on. I have a feeling things aren't so violent in their world
I used to be a stranger 7,994 August 21, 2013 Share August 21, 2013 It's supposed to have technology existing for the sake of recognizably, despite historical incongruity. TVtropes calls it "Schizo Tech". Whatever works for the sake of forwarding a plotline or making a punchline, exists, regardless of how anachronistic it may or may not be. Of course, I'm aware about the presence of some gadgets, machines, even a railroad system in the series. But I want to know your point of view. If you're just asking if time passes the same way for them, I'd find that hard to argue against. However, if you mean that technology evolves at the same speed, I don't think so. The ponies use magic, so they have little need for some gadgets that we might need. This signature was removed for being too obnoxious and arrogant. -Makusu2 By the way, if you're talking to me in a thread, please quote my previous post. Otherwise, I might not respond to you. Diamondeye83 49 August 29, 2013 Share August 29, 2013 Pony houses are in a style similar to the high Middle Ages. However, in that time, everyone was either a farmer, a lord, a soldier, or a craftsman. The evidence of professional sports teams and schools suggest a later period. I would guess around 1750-1775 Silver Dusk: http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/silver-dusk-r4437
Declen 118 August 29, 2013 Share August 29, 2013 They don't have electricity Yes, they do. Hydroelectrical dam (Mysterious Mare Do Well), flatiron (Suited for Success), X-ray film (Reed it and Weep), hair dryer (Best Night Ever), and its industrial version (Just for Sidekicks). So, the technology in MLP:FiM is a mishmash of everything including a kitchen sink. It's supposed to have technology existing for the sake of recognizably, despite historical incongruity. TVtropes calls it "Schizo Tech". Whatever works for the sake of forwarding a plotline or making a punchline, exists, regardless of how anachronistic it may or may not be. Exactly. That idea has first stunned me in "Battlestar Galactica". Is supposed to be a space opera (with lazers and other futuristic stuff), but instead every thing there (except of cylon techs) looks very familiar to us. And R.D.Moor did it deliberately, so, futuristic stuff wouldn't distract audience from what's important there: teh drama.
Winona the Dog 1,984 August 29, 2013 Share August 29, 2013 I think it's more or less; the same time period we're in. The use of magic makes things more convenient for the ponies so they never had a industrialized era like humans have.
