Starswirl is probably still around, it's just that we don't see him as much but there are some references to him in the show. He is probably very old like Celestia, and probably teaching other unicorns magic.

There's no evidence they even knew each other. Starswirl was around before Celestia was in power so he's probably older. zzz

There may be some evidence in the fact that celestia had star swirls  personal journal, this only shows that she has it though so you do have a valid point.

Well it's hard to say if Celestia or Luna even knew Star Swirl or if Star Swirl worked with them

 

To what it is show in Luna eclipses, Luna knew Twilight was dressed as him. This could mean she recognized out fit because he wore it all the time or Luna could have just read about him and all that he did.

 

Celestia has his book and knew what he was researching, but this does not mean she knew him that well.

 

So right now there is no info to show Celestia and Luna knew him or if SS worked with the 2 of them.
