Spike the Super-Special Dragon?

And I'm not saying he's super-special just because he can talk, is nice, and has green fire. Actually, it's the fire that brings me to this topic. Spike can breathe fire and put things in/take things out of his own personal space, much like the Duat from Egyptian legend. What kind of dragon is he? Where did he come from? What do you think?

Guess the answer is found with the examiners over at Canterlot, where Twilight first got the egg containing Spike. One headcanon I remember hearing is that the magic Twilight used fomented by the Rainboom hatched Spike with that transitory fire ability.

 

Either that, or it's a general trait in young dragons - it would certainly help with when they harvest gems, just breathe fire on a new horde and it'll return to your personal stash!

I think dragon-fire has certain magical properties that regular fire doesn't (it burns at a colder temperature or it lingers longer or something), and the scrolls Twilight uses to communicate to the Princess are treated or enchanted in such a way that they teleport to the other pony when the scroll is burned with Dragon-fire.

 

As for Spike personally, he's probably a wingless earth dragon of some sort, of an as-of-yet unidentified race of dragon. His egg probably got stolen by a group of deliquent teenage phoenixes and the egg was rescued by Philomena when she decided she had fallen into a bad crowd.

I like to think the magical properties of Spike's fire breathe came from either Twilight's magic bust when she hatched him or at some point Celestia enchanted him.

 

Otherwise, Spike is like any other young dragon minus the attitude.

I prescribe to the theory that his fire was influenced by his pony upbringing and/or some unicorn magic, though, as evidenced by scenes of him cooking delicious pastries and popcorn with his breath (yuck), I'm sure his fire could burn some mothers up if need be.

 

Also,

Spike is totally a messiah destined to defeat the evil dragon overlords and unite the ponies and dragons in harmony after centuries of conflict, but that's all in S5.

The only thing I've heard about Spike's backstory is that Celestia was behind the whole entrance exam. She found or collected his egg and gave it to Twilight as a test. I'm not sure she knew the outcome, or that Rainbow Dash would play a role. But I think she sensed that Twilight had the ability inside her to be special.

The other thing I heard is that Celestia raised and trained Spike while Twilight was growing up and only made him her assistant when she was older.
