Quilled Inc 161 September 21, 2013 Share September 21, 2013 So here's my first attempt at doodling a pony.... So am I going in the right direction here? Yeah, I know it's pathetic; the neck is too thick, the legs aren't shaped quite right, etc, etc.... I know what's wrong, I just have no freaking clue how to fix it Anyone have any recommendations or resources for me? Any help would be appreciated! 1 Analyst - Writer - Musician - Voice Actor "A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities..." ~J.R.R. PonyBoy15 428 September 21, 2013 Share September 21, 2013 It's not bad, just got to work on the proportions a bit and that usually comes with time and experience. I have noticed that my latest drawings look better than the ones I first drew out. After drawing for a while, you will get that muscle memory in your hands and start making things look a lot better. Just keep drawing and keep up the good work! Rarity: Generous, Classy, and Sophisticated... Well, i recomend you to shade your image, NOT with black color, but a darker tone of the pony's skin, search for a light pattern (left top right top etc.) to get a base for the shading effect, still i think that's cool! . Onylex 2,837 September 21, 2013 Share September 21, 2013 (edited) Looks good for what it is, I mean nobody starts off as a pro. Drawing is not a talent, its a skill. A skill that takes tuns and tuns of practice to get good at. I would recommend studying proportions and angles first, starting off with very simple and basic shapes will help you in the long run. People always ask me how to draw pony heads at different anles and mouth/facile expressions so I made this base template. You can sort of see the very simple and base shapes for the heads. I hope it helps! Edited September 21, 2013 by Onylex
dedacct6 2,591 September 21, 2013 Share September 21, 2013 Hmmmmmmm pretty good, but there are extremely big problems with the proportions an the anatomy is way off. Here are some specifics. The head is way too big. And the neck is too thick, the legs look a bit awkward, maybe because their very rounded. Overall I suggest ou use a pony anatomy chart to work on that anatomy

I'll practice with those faces, thanks for providing them! 2 Analyst - Writer - Musician - Voice Actor "A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities..." ~J.R.R. I used to be a horrible drawer a few years ago but I got better. It just take practice. here are some tips. ALWAYS USE A REFERENCE. It will make everything so much easier. Start out with basic shapes, then move on to get the more complex shapes that you want in your picture. Move on to the outline and details. Practice and I guarantee you will be an awesome drawer. Onylex 2,837 September 22, 2013 Share September 22, 2013 (edited) ALWAYS USE A REFERENCE To tell you the truth, refecns can help but I wouldn't recommend always using one. Mostly do to the fact that if you are constantly using referees, you might find yourself relying on them to much and when you go to make your own character or pose or anything really, it can be hard to do because you do not have a reference to rely on. Studying base shapes and very simplistic/basic shapes will truly help in the long run. Instead of looking at something you want to draw as a whole, look at it as very simple looking shapes. By studying the basic shapes can also help you create your own art style instead of having to use a reference to draw something or do a specific art style. I have some examples of my pony art style that is possible when you learn the vary basic shapes, you'll be able to manipulate them and make an entirely new style. You would not believe how much I appreciate you saying that! Most of my artistic friends give off the 'it comes naturally' vibe and that is always incredibly discouraging! I'll practice with those faces, thanks for providing them! Sure man Im happy to help, I have had so many people tell me that I have a real 'talent' and all though I do love the complements, I have to stop and correct them on that. Truth is most people are better artist than they might release but they may just be going about things the wrong way or in other, words Foundation is key. Even pro artis still use base shapes form time to time. I also have this for doing the body shapes. Edit: I also forgot to mention that getting into a specific art and studying it can help as well. ~Digital drawing/painting ~watercolors ~pencil drawings etc. Edited September 23, 2013 by Onylex
Silverwisp the Bard 2,354 September 23, 2013 Share September 23, 2013 So am I going in the right direction here? Actually, since you only got one pic so far, i'd say you're currently only standing, not going yet Honestly though: Get some understanding of pony anatomy, then get drawing, regularly ask for feedback (this is important), rinse, repeat. And here is the sheet that taught yours truly. My Art Thread, updated (almost) daily Tomorrow will take us away, far from home No one will ever know our names But the bard songs will remain.
