Brony Conversion: A Polite Challenge

How did you find MLP Forums?: I typed the word Brony into Google and here I am.

How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: I haven't, yet. That's why I'm here.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, an amateur astronomer, a writer (just a hobby) and a lover of art in it's many forms.

I like my coffee black. A lot of people may not; but that's the whole point of independent perception. In order to understand why I like my coffee black, I'd have to explain, in detail, it's appeal. Which is why I'm here.

You see, I love art in all of it's forms (images, music, interactive experiences, TV shows) and recently I've been noticing that there is a large group of mature people who think that this show, which I've never watched an episode of in my life, is a piece of fine art. These people call themselves Bronies and the art they love is My Little Pony; Friendship Is Magic.

Now, as previously mentioned, I don't watch the show. But art intrigues me. So I want you to show me it's appeal. I want you to show me why you love this show so much that it may be considered high art.

I want you to convert me into a Brony, if you will.

Tell me your favorite episodes, your favorite characters, your favorite moments. Tell me why you became a Brony and why you remain one. Tell me what this show has to offer a man like me. Convert me.

This is a respectful thread. Please, no insults or blatant rudeness. I just want to talk ponies.

Now for whatever reason seeing this kind of introduction always brings me out in a rash but that's hardly an appropriate way to start things off.

You want to find reason to begin to commit yourself to MLP and to the fan base? Well then I'll do my best to see that this is exactly what happens. Irrespective of what your agenda may be you will always find a place here in this particular forum, as you may have already noticed the Brony community that resides here is incredibly welcoming and hospitable to all newcomers but as an artist, or rather an art connoisseur, you will no doubt find some sections of this place more appealing than others which is perfectly fine and bringing out one's talent through their enthusiasm is something that is actively encouraged here. To describe My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic as art to someone like me is quite perplexing and makes me curious as to exactly what kind of person you are, this is a good sign as it means that someone here has already taken an interest in who you are, extra points for guessing who correctly ;).

What you have asked us to do is effectively sell MLP to you, entice you with what it means to be one of us and why we feel so committed to what is admittedly a rather bizarre yet utterly wonderful creation, I'm sorry to say that I do not consider myself to be particularly skilled in marketing and as such feel that it would be inappropriate for me to do so. I, personally, don't consider MLP to be art at all but rather a kind of philosophy, a way of life and a new way of looking at things and the perceptions that it has given to me over the course of my time here are nothing short of wondrous. I can't really elaborate upon why I feel the way I do as I believe that it is an experience that is different for each and every person but it has to be more than just seen to be believed, you won't become a Brony by simply trying to understand us no, that's not possible, you have to feel in order to truly understand.

The only way you can expect to fully comprehend what we are is to become one of us, that's probably our biggest selling point, the fact that it takes one of the most double-sided elements in life to make the jump; curiosity, it's what brought me here and I'm hoping it's what'll convince you to stay.

Now weird, overly-philosophical ramblings aside we have other questions to answer! Starting with one I know for a fact that I can answer sincerely; who is my favourite pony? Well if my Avatar image doesn't scream the answer you're looking for then I'll spell it out to be on the safe side; Applejack is by far my favourite pony, if you want answers as to why then you're gonna have to do a little probing yourself! ;)

I've, in truth, not been a Brony for very long, I've only been one for 2 months now but that's been more than enough time for it to truly mean something to me and to become a very significant part of my life. I'm also only 18, though I would appreciate it if you don't begrudge me for it, which means I'm not terribly experienced in the ways of the world but in spite of this I've found something that I know will never be usurped as one of my favourite things about this world; people, just ordinary people. This is a result of what I have found by joining this fan base and what I have discovered by embracing those who welcomed me, making this jump is a life changing experience and there are people a lot older than I who can attest to this.

The choice is ultimately yours although I do sincerely hope that you do choose to join as I would very much like to get to know you better :). Regardless of your choice I wish you all the best and all the luck in making your decision, feel free to take as long as you like cause we aren't likely to be going anywhere anytime soon!

I like Derpy, and The Last Roundup and Applebuck Season are my favorite episodes. Derpy is my favorite because she's like me. I became a brony when my friends said 'this is actually pretty cool.' Gave it a shot, it was. Being a brony made my life better. I felt happy. Before I was just a bit 'meh I'm fine.' and now I just feel better. The community is amazing. The people are sending random strangers money to help a brony. Many people.

The show is really well made. Time and effort is put into a show only meant to sell ponies. There is a second level of humor. Internet references, fan jokes, everything. The characters are real, the story is great, and the animation is superb.

The show is great all around.

I only love you platonically.

As in plate tectonics.

As in two bodies sliding against each other.

Thank you very much for the response, it was very interesting. Especially your philosophical perspective on the show. The fact that you find something philosophically meaningful about it means there may be something so deep it's unexplainable, which IS a major selling point for me. I like it when a subject's value exceeds it's visible worth.

What you're implying, though, is that I simply become a Brony to learn it's meaning. I don't see how this is possible. Perhaps you're saying that I should just watch the show and discover something personal?

If so (even if otherwise), which episode that you would recommend to me has the most philosophical weight?

Well, I won't know if I'll be able to convert you, but it's worth a try! Ah, just kidding.

I guess I'm probably significantly younger compared to other Bronies, but I guess I look at the show in a similar perspective. I'd hate to start off on negative terms so I'll probably add those little glitches at the end, I guess. And I could see your story telling skills in your comments and responses, I was very gripped and intrigued although you were firstly just describing a Brony!

I became a 'Brony', or 'Pegasister, because.. well, I just generally liked what I saw. I know its a very plain and boring response, but I don't really know what other way to put it.

I honestly didn't see it coming and such, but I was familiar with it all with little siblings having toys from older generations, etc, and I wasn't interested at all. At - all. In early teenage years I started hearing about it more a bit and I was very confused because I began seeing gifs and memes etc quoting or looking over the show.

I literally switched on my computer, pulling on my troll face on a mission to see what the commotion was about. I started seeing episodes and as painful as it was searching 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' into Google, I wasn't let down. My troll face disappeared about half way through and I couldn't help but chuckle a bit with the little punch lines and flicks with the plot (see that pun? SEE MY AWESOME PUN SKILLS?!) and script.

So, you know how it goes. I started seeing more episodes and I got more and more interesting, seeing little memes and stuff, incredibly curious about how the story would continue. Watching My Little Pony also lifted up my spirits in a small state of depression, as my family suffered from financial problems with no support, stuck in a drug-filled area and living in a flat in a vulnerable place. I was also able to focus more with my youtube channel as well as school, learning new things from the show, and focusing on the animation and voice acting (etc) and the whole concept just made me - you know - smile!

Overall, I guess My Little Pony made me happy when I was sad, made me laugh and took the 'guilty' out of 'guilty pleasure'. I met one of my best friends through this simple little kids show and it really turned my face inside out and that frown upside down.

Now I'm far more extrovert and going into things.

I guess my favorite character is Scootaloo, although it's often expected to be one of the Mane Six. It's because it's like the plot. You don't know much about this character, and it just wants to make you know more about them. I would go into depth about why I love this character but then I would be giving you spoilers - and we can't let that happen, can we?

And we've all got a bit of Derpy in us, don't we? I like her too because we both share the element of randomness.

:o MAYBE THAT'S MY ELEMENT.. MAYBE ONE OF THE KEYS FOR THE SIX LOCKS..! :o

I can say no more.. PIKAW!

*Aims horn at the ground and smoke swells around the scene. Hurries over into the distance and trips over a rock. Continues running*

Wow, what a thorough response. Thanks.

If you don't mind my asking; which was your favorite episode? And which was the episode that helped finalize your title as a Pegasister?

I don't actually have a favourite episode despite having favourites about almost everything else, sorry :/

I do think that you need to watch it for yourself as it is something VERY personal, this is what I meant in saying that you wouldn't be able to understand it as well as we do unless you embrace it for yourself.

Also I'm sorry if I sounded at all rude or judgemental before, that's not how I like to behave and reading what I put back to myself makes me feel a little bad so again, sorry :(.
