Bronies or Furries? are they the same?

Furry(from my limited understanding): People who would like to be an animal, and to fulfill this fantasy (sexual or nonsexual) dress up as their "spirit animal".... Again this is from my very limited understanding,

Brony: One of many teenage, and older males that enjoy My Little Pony, and often create art, music, crafts and fictions based upon it.

As you can see, there really isn't anything similar about these 2 groups........ Except maybe that society thinks we are weird.

I wouldn't say they are related.

Furries just took ponies and ruined them with their NSFW art. There was a time where I went onto good images, looking for a picture of Big Mac to put as a wallpaper on my laptop and I saw like a load of anthro Big Macs some had drawn in a NSFW manner.

I don't hate furries per se. But they do seem to try and convert everyone they come across (The ones I met anyway. There is a dude at university who is one, who keeps trying to force it on people). Bronies, just seem to be all laid back and casual.

Yeah no none of you really seem to know what furries actually are.

I'm not one myself, but I have a few close friends who are into it. Honestly, the only major difference between the two fan cultures is that furries are more expansive, covering a lot more media both derivative and original. They have a far more storied history for having been around longer, with their own drama sagas, big names, etc. But both fandoms are alike in the sense that they're that, fandoms. There's different elements, some very NSFW, there's fan art, dedicated conventions. Furries aren't totally anthro based, a lot of them make feral art and the like. I'll give that they tend to make more anthro than the MLP fandom as a whole.

Furries tend to be somewhat more tolerant of weirdness than bronies. Ironically enough.

Well, your ''limited understanding'' needs some facts!

Furries do not ''want to be an animal'' and will not ''fulfill this fantasy.''

I mean, there are some that do that, but the normal ones ignore them, much like we ignore cloppers.

Furries are not that bad.

I didn't mean to make it sound like a bad thing.... Sorry :( ...... As I said, I know very very little about the furry fandom.... Could you please explain?

Very similar, but both are fandoms nonetheless, and the activities found in both the furry and MLP fandoms are takes on activity that's common in most fandoms, only it just so happens that there is more overlap due to inherent similarities in the focus of the two fandoms (cut and dry, both are focused on cartoon animals, the difference being MLP is focused on a specific type of cartoon animal) and remarkably similar stigmas applied to both Bronies and furries.

They overlap, but no. Furries are a subculture. Subcultures reject typical cultural norms for more underground movements. Bronies are a fan culture. Although we verge on subculture, we wouldn't exist without the show and that's what makes us a fan culture. Furthermore, Furries revolve around anthropomorphic animals, primarily bipedal represantions. The MLP ponies, although anthropomorphic with bipedal tendencies, are primarily quadrupedal and are more equine then human.
