Seth Eclipse kicked a stone along the road as he continued his walk towards the Ponyville dam. The wolf was wearing his tinted sunglasses and skin layer for his leg. Thanks to a certain pegasus, he was able to walk among society without the local militia after him. 

 

He was on his way to the Ponyville dam for a purpose. During his most recent encounter with his friend, Doctor Volt, he was offered a potential job. After being forced to exile himself and basically live in a cave for half a year, he was more than glad that somepony was willing to hire him. Volt didn't know all the details, but he did know Seth was out of a job. The pony always said he was lonely in the dam, so being there would probably lift both their sprites.

 

He finally arrived at the main entrance to the water station and rang that call button, waiting for a reply.

Volt was as usual walking on the ceiling, upside down, using his wings to push himsel on it, and holding a prussian wrench in his mouth

 

"ngh there is the leak..."

 

he said noticing a steel pipe blowing a small flow of water from a side

 

he carefully approached the pipe and turned the wrench around it, starting to turn the small o ring with his theeth, when suddenly he heard an allarm

 

"what the hay is this?"

 

Volt dropped everything and flew at high speed back to the control room, he entered in it landing in front of the computers, on the main screen he could see a familiar wolf waiting out of the main entrance, he didn't noticed the camera

 

"Seth?"

 

Volt pushed a button and an interphone activated

 

"Seth my friend! what are you doing here??"

 

Volt shouted with escitement on the microphone

 

"wait for me! i am sending down an elevator!"

 

Volt pushed a series of button on an old and dusty yellow keyboard, than turned around flying down a pit, the typical noise of a powerfull electric motor turning on, and a small unstable, steel platform started to descende, following Volt's patch

 

Volt arrived at the lower level, kicking open the door he didn't say anything, he litteraly jumed on the wolf hugging him

 

"Seth old friend! how are ya???"

Seth heard the intercom and was going to reply, but then heard the user rush away from the mic. From where he stood, he could hear the elevator motors begin to lower the metal box. However, it wasn't the elevator that met him. With no warning, he was thrown to the ground by a vary familiar pegasus.

 

"Volt, you old fighter!" He laughed, hugging his old friend in return. "Can't a friend stop by to see his favorite engineer at work? Ok, to tell you the truth, I was wondering if you were still looking for another pair of paws to help out around the dam. If you are willing to hire me, I would love to offer what I can." He said.

"i don't own the dam, you see... even if it is not strictly weather-related, Cloudsdale manages water on earth too, after all, it is still a fundamental part of the weather cycle, to cut short, this dam is propriety of Cloudsdale, and i am still paied and hired by them eh eh.. but no worries "

 

Volt giggled

 

"i already sent a request for an helper at the management section, soon after i returned here after the trip; i asked them to hire someone else, and they said yes ... of course i had to lie about your identity... i mean.. to them you are a pegasus.. but no one ever came her to control who is working.. they just want to be sure than Ponyville is safe from the water, and that i send them the right provision of lighting "
 

Volt pointed his hoof fiery to a row of Tesla coils on the other side of the lower side river at the feet of the dam, sparkling and raging furiosly

 

"my little joy and pride!.. anyway..."

 

Volt dived his nose in his bag-saddle, emerging with a small white id card

 

"here it is Seth! your badge! Stick here a photo of yourself if you want! the pay is not much.. around 1300 bits a month, a pegasus will bring it here personally.. i prefer cash you know..  the job is usually boring, and sometime very hard, the positive thing is that is all self managment.. i have my own shedule and stuff... just being alone doesn't help much to complete secondary tasks too.. the dam works..smooth and fine,  but inside it is a disaster... anyway i will tell everything you need later..  i am so happy to see you! "

 

Volt strongly hugged the wolf again, and then let him go

 

"follow me! the elevator should be arrived by now... first i need to provide you a working suit and the right tools... there is lot of water here.. but the worring things are the turbines and generators.. it is not a good thing mixing electricity and water you know... the suit itself should provide enough protection... do you have any experience with pumblings, electricty, or computers?"

 

Volt asked waking back in the door and opening the protection grid of the rusty, old, metal elevator that looked like was never used since centuries

Seth beamed at his friend as he stood up and fallowed him to the shaft. 

 

"Well, for credentials, I was head of the military research department for the wolves before I became a diplomat. Before that, I was a pupsicle." Seth said with a laugh. Thinking back, Seth wondered if he had ever told Volt about his past. He knew Volt had something to do with a weather company military experimental project, but he never delved to deep into it.

 

The wolf entered the metal box, lifting his shades. It revealed his metallic eye, however it had gotten an upgrade from last time. Now, it was a sharp icy blue.

Volt noticed the new eye

 

"uhh nice color! i love blue! and.. well that's.. nice to hear i guess! i am sure you will find yourself at your old work i guess.. ehe he"

 

Volt said turning around and pressing a green button with his hoof, the elevator shacked a little without moving

 

"damn it.. that's what i meant when i was talking about secondary tasks.."

 

Volt turned around bucking the control panel with violence, the motor started to shake, then the elevator accelerated at high speed, almost crushing volt on the floor, after some seconds at high speed, the elevator stopped, launching volt in the air

 

"wooooaah... i guess we missed our floor.. well nevermind.. no rush.. welcome..to the top if the dam!"

Volt proudly said opening the cage and taking a big breath of the pure air over the huge dam, the sun shining against him and projecting his shadow on the metal elevator, on his left, an immense mirrow of calm and crystalline water, where the river dissapeared to the view, an huge floating city could be see on the distance, a beatifull rainboe shining over it

 

"that's cloudsdale!" Volt said opening his eyes and poiting his hoof to his left

 

"and down here we hace Ponyville! and right there, far far away, you can see the Canterlot's castle!"

 

Volt turned around, looking to his right, the small and happy town almost at the huge feet of the dam, they were incredibly high, the lover side of the river was showing how tall the hole dam was, looking down, it looked almost like a small tear out of a giant's eye, on the left, the entrance where Volt met Seth, on the right, the small electric building with the coils

 

"welcome to the ponyville dam my friend! one o the most awesome piece of pegasi engineering!"

Seth looked out on the land, admiring the view. He watched the cool waters glisten with the rays of the evening light. He then looked over to the northern mountains. Somewhere over there was his cave he had been living in since the incident. This was already an upgrade, plus he was being paid to do what he loved: work in a secluded area, and hang with his best friend. 

 

He bumped his friend on the shoulder. "You know, this is the best view I've gotten of Equestria since I was forced to fall out of the sky." He said with a laugh. "So, what do you need me to do around here?"

"uh yeah you are right, we should stop waisting time and go back to work!"

 

Volt said opening again the elevator and hoping it was still working

 

"basically what i do here is mantenaince, half of my time is spent on checking and fixing penstocks, then we have the turbines, and then the electric part, which involves most of the time since it is the most delicate, you see, all of this dam is made of the finest concrete and steel, we had .. some.. minor problems time ago.. but a strnage pony called Mare-do-something helped us, but anyway, still it is solid as a tank, electric part dough require continue 'love' and time..  i will wait to make you work there, becaue, as you may know, i feed on electricty, so i am almost immune at it.. your fur may be a little problem for sparks... you know.. point effect and corona discharge... i think you may help me with the mantenaince of all the secondary services, as you can see, this stupid elevator is an example of the state of everything else... each month we have a deep check on all the pipelines, it has been done the next week, so we have time to fix everything else...  don't worry for problems, everything is computer controlled, each time you hear an air allarm, run to the main room and you wll see where the problem is, really.. those computers makes it all easier... so! If you want to step in i will show you the main control room, and your bedroom!"

 

Volt ended closing his eyes in a smile

Seth glanced back at the view, taking it in one last time. This was going to be good for him. He fallowed Volt into the shaft and closed the metal gate behind him.

 

"There is one question I have to ask. When you labeled me a pegasus for the weather headquarters in Cloudsdale, what was I like?" He asked with a hint of a smile. Back in the old days, Seth and his brother used to joke what they would look like as ponies and what not. Between the two, Seth would have guessed Dawn would be the winged pony due to his love of flying with the airforce. 

 

"So besides that, what is the average day look like around here?" He asked again, more serious this time.

Volt said closing the grid and hitting the button

 

"just coat, mane color and cutie mark, i told them that you are grey with a yellow mane and a scrool around a bolt as cutie mark.. they will not go here an check! i had to invent something!"

 

Volt giggled as the elevator started to move smothier than before and descending back into the dam

 

"so, each night before going to sleep, i write a report of the stuff i repaired or checked, then i make a list of things i have yet to fix or check, then the following day in the morning i will check those things, if they are not in the same moment were i have some bigger mantenaince planned, but all of those are sheduled in the computer, it is not easy to miss them, you can wake up when you want basically... Cloudsdale requires at least eight hours of work at day, even on saturday, but again, no one will check, they just want to be sure that the dam doesn't fall apart, i usually wake up at seven am if i don't have a big shedule or a programmed mantenaince, breakfast and then following the list, launch break and then go on, untill you are neough tired or the shedule is over obviusly"

 

Volt said as the elevator stopped

 

"this way!"

 

volt opened the grid and walked out

 

" there is plenty of space here, i usually prepare launch for myself as cloudsdale provide only shitty rations.. i bet they are the same that they give to the roal guards.. bleah. luckily Ponyville is very close and being a pegasus you don't have fear to ask anything! Sugarcube corner is always opened eh eh "

 

Volt hit a button on the wall, and a long row of neon lights turned on, showing a long metal corridor

 

"as stated before, it is all self managed, so we can plan everything, it is an awesome work if you think about it... Clousdale is always fine when you are extremely loyal to your job.. i bet the Rainbow Dash is here as main weather manager just for her loyalty toward Cloudsdale.... " " .. and the factory.."

 

Volt whispered to himself

 

"anyway here we are! the storage room! those working suits are made for a pony, but i asked down in the town to have one modified for something resembling a wolf.. eh eh.."

 

Volt said opening the door to an huge room, filled with pipes, pumps, tools, soldering stations, boxes of all sizes and a set of old blue, grey, black, working suits

 

"try this!"

 

Volt finished launching at Seth a slightly longer suit

 

"sorry for the holes for the wings.. they couldn't close them.. it should fit you by the way"

"Vary convincing." Seth commented, looking to his friend. "Dash is loyal though... and has a good punch. Did I mention she kicked me in the... well you get the picture."

 

Seth took the suit and tried it on. It was a bit abrasive, something Seth was never a fan of. He never liked to be restrained by anything. Other than the holes in the back midsection, it fit perfectly.

 

"So, how do I look?" Seth asked, sprawling himself out like a gaudy super model. He growled playfully to add to the effect.

"you.. look.. ridi.. fine.. i mean fine! really  good eh eh.. you just need wings and you may look like a furred wonderbolt"

 

Volt giggled at the idea of a flying wolf as a wonderbolt

 

"anyway.."

 

he gave Seth a saddle bag

 

"it has all the necessary.. a full set of scre drivers, a full set of english keys, duct tape and shirt of sorta... if you need a particual tool, just look on the main room! there is everything you need! so.. do you want to see first your barrack.. i mean.. bedroom, or the main control room? "

 

Volt said with a smile still giggling at the vane wolf

"A winged wolf..." Seth thought out loud. "The gods of the canine kind. I too wish I had wings." He said, strapping the bag to his side.

 

"Well, I would think that the main control room would be our first stop. I can check out the my quarters when the we are done there." He said, looking around. It was a bit concealing it the dam, but he only liked it more. It reminded of his old home in the cave. As he fallowed Volt down the passage way, he asked. "So, you just work in this place alone? No one to talk to for days on end?"

"then let's go to the main room! it is just a floor up this!"  Volt said trotting toward a staircase

 

"uh sorry, i forgot..."

 

he opened the bag, taking a yellow and old piece of paper and hanging it to Seth

 

"map... you will need it.. this place is big you will see... anyway..."

 

Volt stopped walking, staring at a wall

 

"i am lucky you know Seth? .. i mean... i have computers and electronics.. i can leave the dam by time, i can visit Ponyville and even take a trip with all of you guys.. but.. it hasn't been like this before.. yeah i wasn't alone, there was an old earth pony here before me.. Pipe Wrench his name... i don't know why an earth pony worked here.. but i can tell you this... he was a gear.. a piece of the dam... he died crushed by a pack of pipes, right down there"

 

Volt pointed his hoof to a big crack on the white concrete on the floor, right under a massive pump

 

"and you know.. i worked with him for only few month.. he teached me everything.. i was the only pony he met after lot of time.. i mean.. very lot of time... and i wasn't there when it happened.. he died alone Seth.. with the only friend he ever had, going crazy and trying to murder HIS only friend..."

 

Volt turned his head pointing at Seth's scar on the neck

 

"it happened when i escaped after what i did... i .. wasn't there... "

 

Volt turned around and started walking more slowly toward the staircase

 

"i don't blame anyone but me.. at least he is in a better place now.. i just wish he could see the sun before leaving.... since it.. the company raised the budget... i installed all of this controls.. a way out... i can still have a normal life.. he was a gear.. i am a worker... there is an huge difference Seth.. but to answer your question. yes i am always alone here while working... rarely Nightstrike returns from his roal duties and i have the chanche to spend some time with him, on weekends i try to spend some of my time down in Ponyville.. so you see, it is not that bad after all!

 

Volt said with a forced smile before jumping on the stair

 

"watch out for your paws, those damn stairs like to plays jokes.. sharp edges"

Seth felt his heart sink when he heard the tail of the news. He knew some about the death of his friend when he still worked at the bar, but Volt didn't go into much detail. He hatted to bring up such subjects, as it only reminded him of how much he shut himself out.

 

Shaking his head of the thoughts, he looked to Volt as they continued to walked towards the command center. It was going to be great finally working with somepony again.

 

"I must thank you Volt. If you wouldn't have accepted me, I would probably gone insane back home. There's not many job opening for a wolf, let alone the terminator."

Cloudsdale is not a good place trust me.. social pshycology friend.. it is just apparence.. Pegasi are a fighting race.. we never stop.. we will do everything for a goal.. some of us got over the border of the sanity... but somepony was able  to get back"

 

Volt stopped on the stairs looking back at the wolf

 

"and a friend was the reason why i did come back from that insanity.. but it is all over now.."

 

Volt gave a small push with his wings jumping out of the stairs on the the level

 

"here we are Seth.. you know? It is so amazing for me to finally work with somep.. somewolf after all of this time.. it gets a little depressing listening always to the same music.."

 

Volt opened a big metallic door, stepping inside he clopped his front hooves on the ground, and the huge room turned on like a Hearts warming's tree

 

"here we are! the panic room eh eh.. please step in! This is the heart and brain of the entire facility.. you can't do enough damage around the dam in one year as much as you can do here with a simply pressure of a button... so.. watch your paws! eh eh"

 

Volt kicked a cd player liying on the ground that started playing a rock tune

Seth's smile faded completely at the mention of killing. Memories began to flood in as he recalled every moment of the pony war. All the bloodshed. All the death.

 

A slight tear rolled down his face as he tried to purge his memories, but this time it was too strong. "Volt... there is something I should probably tell you..." He began, taking a seat on the cold floor. "Contrary to what you probably think of me, I am not the innocent honorable wolf everyone thinks me to be. Remember when I said I was frozen? Well, that was because I am over a thousand years old. I am from a time where the ponies and wolves were at war... I was a warier... I killed ponies... thousands of them..." He said, holding his head in shame. If he was going to work with Volt, it was best he knew about his past.

"Seth.. friend... did you ever asked yourself why i stabed you that time? why i was crazy and bipolar? think about it... you Know Nightstrike... why is he like this, with that skin.. and he has no parents? "

 

he removed his hoof

 

"Seth, as i told you before, Cloudsdale is not  a good place... i worked in a laboratory Seth... under Cloudsdale, deep underground in the Everfree.. we were asked to develop weapons... we ended on genetic engineering and phsyicall 'improvement'.. that's why i was able to build myself a bionic body after the incident... Nightstrike is the result of a succesefull experiment.. we replaced skin.. organs... we brainwashed ponies, we tortured them to make them behave, psycological torture, physical torture, unbearable things that you can't even immagine.. it was not a laboratory my friend.. it was a slaughterhouse.. it is either them or you.. your sanity.. or your death... trust me.. no one would remain alive there.. no victim.. no scientist.. the only way is to turn off your coscience.. act.. but not think.. think, but only coldy.. we were the shame of the ponykind Seth.. i am glad it is all over... and so it is over that war and so all of those things are over! Harmony reign on Equestria now Seth, don't forget it, and don't you dare about thinking about the past or bad things while you are around me! you changed, i changed, what matters is that we are here.! now and tomorow! "

Seth placed a paw on his friend's shoulder.

"Thanks Volt... I know how you feel, and that I agree with you that we should look past it. I brought it up because... well, I owed you the truth. If I was going to be here, you needed to know." 

 

He extended his grasp to give Volt a light hug. After a half-minute, he let go of him and looked around the control room. "So, this is the heart of the operation? Feels just like the days when I worked on the cold fusion projects back home. You know Volt, you would have loved to see some of the toys the wolves brought up. In saying that, I'm still hoping I can get a closer look at those coils outside some time." He said with a smile.

Volt shouted to himself while trowing himself on a chair that spinned around

 

"and for the coils no problem, we have a planned manteinance right this afternoon, some lazy pegasi will have to do the manual job this time eh eh"

 

Volt chuckled at the thoughts of Pegasi needing to make some clouds crash on each other

 

"AHAHAH! that's why i love working here.. sorry.. nevermind just.. some stupid thoughts eh eh... so! You are right this is the control room, in this main screen, you can see every camera around the dam, just .."

 

Volt approached a big red tracking ball on the console

 

"move your paw here to zoom or change camera, some can turn around... they were meant for security.. but i don't think that anypony will ever try to get inside a bloody dam! they are usefull now just to locate damages... aaaand.. down there you have the report"

 

Volt pointed his hoof on a much smaller screen with a green list displaied on it

 

"everything that has to be done is listed there.. just remove what you have done and add something if you think it need a check or repair, on the other side of the room.."

 

Volt pushed himself on the chair to the other side with his wings

 

"you have the control panel of the dam, here you can turn on and off generator, activate elvators, open valves.. everything is needed to control the water flow.. you will learn this later eh eh.. i think that Ponyvile doesn't need a shower yet"

 

Volt giggled on the chair and closed his eyes

 

"so, any question? if everything is ok i will show you your room and then we can go to replace a coil down there!"

Seth looked across the monitors. It gave his usual level of paranoia a rise when he realized there was that many cameras watching him, but it wasn't anything to worry about.

 

"Sure, it'll be nice to see my residence here." He said, fallowing his equine friend out of the main room.

 

"By the way, about the cold fusion. We still haven't locked it fully down yet. We are actually thinking to import some pony tech to help with what's still needed." He replied, recalling the work.

Volt said, noticing Seth's being a little uncomfortable he added

 

"don't worry.. no one watch those camera but me... i assure you.. no one is inside here but me and you! why someone should follow you here? anyway follow me, we have to get trough the turbine room"

 

Volt opened a door on the side of the room, light coming inside from the high windows forced him to close his eyes, then his eyes adapted to the sun light filtering in the massive, huge and almost emprty room

"this is the only place with natural light, it is quite comfortable if you want a moment to read or do what you prefer! follow me! to the other side!"

Seth stopped a moment, looking over the massive room. It was rather large and spacious; it could probably be used for weapons training if needed.

 

Seeing Volt had continued on, Seth fallowed behind him and after a second, caught up to his friend.

 

"I might recommend you to the capital's team...If they hadn't left me here for dead." Seth said, keeping the last bit under his breath. He looked around the room again and asked.

 

"So... if I may ask something of a more personal leave... have you ever had a mate?"

Volt opened the small green emergency door to the other side of the room

 

"here it is!"

 

VOlt shouted pointing his hoof to a row of four doors on a corridor

 

"the last one is my room, the last but one is yours.."

 

Volt approached the door with a piece of yellow tape on it with a writing on it 'Seth'

 

Vol opened the door to a small room, a single bed in the middle of it, a bedside desk with a lamp over it, a large desktop near the door, and an huge number of books hanged on a black glass support on the wall, over the bed a home made wolven pack flag, the same as Seth's cutie marl

 

"i know i know it sucks.. but that's what we have here.. i had the flag made down at Poyville.. a local unicorn.. Rare or something.. i drawn the cymbol i don't know if it is right.. i am sorry.. i thought it could make you feel a bit more like.. home... oh and don't mind the books.. they are all about tecnical stuff and maths.. old Univeristy books.. i stored them here.. you are free to read them.. but... don't do it for your own sanity, the bathroom is in common and it is on the other side of the corridor... you see.. not a nice place.. but still better than Cloudsdale's baracks..."

 

Volt sopped a moment turning around

 

"a mate? you mean a cooworker.. or a love in my life? ... I had a Mare once upon a time.. a beautifull white and red Pegasus.. well.. we were more like friends really.. i was very young when i started working for the Cloudsdale weather corporation.. once inside.. i never saw her again... ever.. but after that.. no.. i don't have anyone or had anyone since i left a good piece of my life in Cloudsdale's hooves... maybe some day i will find the mare of my life Seth.. who knows.. but maybe you meant somethings else?"

 

Volt ended giving a pair of keys to Seth

 

"Are you Hungry? we can look at the kitchen if you want something... i i am sorry if the place sucks... but i. i live here..."

 

Volt said ashamed for not being able to provide Seth a better place or work

 

"i.. i am really sorry.."

 

he said lowering his face to the ground

Seth looked around the room with exited eyes. He stopped when he saw the flag. It was not of the wolven empire, but of the Wolfpack. His smile grew bigger still at the sight.

 

"Volt, what on earth do you have to be sorry for? This room is better than my room I was forced to sleep in for half my life back at the empire." It was a barracks for military training as a pup, but it still counted as a room. "Man, you really went all out on this. I love it. Beats the hell out of the cave I was living in before here. Thank-you man!" He said, giving his friend a punch in the arm.
