Open Letter - Don't Let Fools Drop You

I have never felt so hurt in my life.............apparently, i got an email from my boss, to me and to my staff that one person in our building (an this individual has also been a member of our forums), said that he is somewhat "afraid" of us due to the fact we are trained professional Network Administrators. Now he's the kick; so this guy got jumpy b/c he thought we were somewhat linked to "Internet Police". Now first of all, yes we may "somewhat" fit their profile, however, we are more precise on watching what goes in and out of a network. So you could say, we do some moderating, however, that doesn't mean you should be afraid of us. Yet, as he said that, I felt utterly hurt and I should say......twice as hurt, b/c this is perhaps the 5th time i heard this (4 times, i got over it, but now, its really hitting hard). Not to mention, lack of trust, and that is just heartbreaking. Like ask yourself, our job is to "protect" you.......not "fight" you. Why is it that people are afraid at certain individuals when it comes to IT security. I even question myself if this was the career for me, b/c A. it puts food on my table, B. I enjoy watching out for others, and C. I've been around PC's since the 90's so i understand a lot of it. Pretty much, what I can tell you is.......yes there are times that people will say, "Oh you suck, go to hell, go F*$k yourself", but I learned out to get over it to an extent.

Now, this is goes for everyone. Don't feel bad about something that occurred, b/c its a lesson, yet one thing is does is...............motivates you further, surpassing those who put you down. Do NOT let anyone and I mean anyone stop you from achieving your goals in life. Yet, there maybe times, where you pursue a dream job, and feel proud of your accomplishments however, individuals will do everything in their power to crush you like a bug. Went through that in elementary to high school, been bullied all over, so you could say, i pretty much "carried two crosses" throughout my time at school to my senior graduation. One thing that pissed them off though, was a quote i took from a great Chinese Warlord, which was quite moving for me:

"My Ambition cannot be stopped" - Lord Cao Cao, Prime Minister of Wei Kingdom

Everyday, I went to school and walked from school, i would always think of that quote, b/c its what kept me going. Now that I'm 23 years old, I still keep that quote intact, even on my desk.

Lastly, before you proceed to your dream job, ask yourself this one question (this goes for EVERYONE, Staff and Members):

"When choosing a career, do not put greed over passion"

That means pursue something that you will enjoy, no matter the salary. Don't go off into a career and say "Im gonna be a doctor so i can make 200,000 a year", b/c the reality is many people who do that, don't last long. And I know, I have several careers I love, but in that field, I really wouldn't enjoy it. Choose wisely and don't let people say otherwise, :D

(The reason why, if anyone asks why i didn't post this in Life Advice. Its b/c I wanted to show members, that life is full of surprises, yet the sense of ambition pays off and maybe you guys can learn something from me. Not saying, "oh I want to share my wisdom or so and son", but offer a public advice to many of you who are in High School).

So... let me get this straight... you were hurt (for the fifth time)by the fact this guy was scared of you and you actually knew him a little... but somehow that's preventing him from achieving his hopes and dreams...?

I know what you're saying but... I still feel part of the story is missing. What, did you have to talk to him about something and it freaked him out a little cause it meant that you know things he didn't think you'd know? He's freaked out cause all of a sudden it meant that he's being watched or feels like it and a part of him feels his personal freedom is violated.

The real fun part begins pony... is when you go into DOS prompt on the mail server and send a fake email to them from Bill Gates warning them about the incorrect use of their mouse and the legal ramefications for doing so as they have already been given a warning for misuse of computer and internet technology. lol

Well, the part that he mentions, "Lack of Trust", that part pretty much got me, b/c the problem was, he took things to the extreme, and brought it up to my bosses, b/c he feels as you said, "His personal freedom was violated".  However, I explained to him, that we do not have the power nor the right to break into his personal files.   We only look at the data he went through, such as downloads, emails (we don't open them), etc.  We never look in his email nor his personal data.  We leave all that alone.

Yet, the way he sounded, it was like an senior citizen refusing medical help from EMT.  In other words, when we are there to protect not only him but others, he refuses our help.  And I took it hard, b/c I have this compassionate personality to assist those in need, rather its physical, medical, or IT help, but when im refused, I feel like "shit, what else could I have done" type of thing, :D

Wait... I think I understand what you're saying... You were doing you're job and what you've trained yourself to do and learn because it's equally your passion that you get paid well for... but your happiness in all of that was threatened needlessly based upon falsehood.... so a part of you had to defend that happiness when it was all blown out of proportion on a multitude of things, one of which includes the ignorance an end user.

Exactly, :D

Was not aware this was your job.

Usually when people fear that kind of work, to me says 'you have something to hide'. However I do believe in "Innocent till Proven Guilty" line, and even though he was 'afraid' doesn't mean he neccissarly was hiding anything.

Point being, I know what I do online, I know at one point someone might have spyed on my online activities. My only concern is the protection of my bank account information and my emails which I know aren't in harms way for now. So I dn't really judge your department at all. Ya'll are there to do a job that helps others like us on the net from getting into trouble or getting out of trouble and I respect that.

On that other note on putting passion before money, totally agree with. Though there are times I feel like I've chosen the wrong path in being a 2D animator, and haven't yet made it to working offically for a studieo, I've worked very hard for my degree and don't wish to give up. Sure I worry about whether or not me and my husband will make it, buy our own house, pay our bills etc...but it takes time...eventually we'll get there, long as we keep working hard and believing in ourselves.
