Callisto Ranks the Pokémon Gens! PART 1! (#6-4)
The title's pretty self-explanatory. I'm gonna rank the Pokémon gens for least good to best. So, without further ado, let's go! This is gonna be a huge wall of text, so if you just wanna see my rankings, scroll to the bottom.
#6: Generation Two (Gold/Silver/Crystal)
"Blasphemy!" You shout, hardly believing the words you see on your computer screen. "Gen II was the BEST ONE!" Here me out: I don't think these are bad games at all. But, they're most certainly flawed. And the main flaw that kills these games is their level curve. The levels are bizarrely low for a Pokémon game; the final gym leader mostly uses Pokémon in the late 30's. The regular trainers are even wimpier; I should not be fighting Pokémon around level 8 before the 2nd gym, let alone after it. Due to this, you will have to grind a lot. But, the wild Pokémon are also pathetic, never getting past level 20 or so. So, grinding will take a looooong time. The ability to rematch trainers helps a little, but not much. This alone just makes these games unpleasant for me. This is also my least favorite Gen in terms of Pokémon introduced. Yeah, it has some of my favorites, like Heracross and Ampharos, but what else does it have? Stantler? Aipom? Sunflora? Meh. I don't dislike the new Pokémon at all; they're just sorta there. But, that's enough negative; let's talk positive! Splitting the special stat in to two stats, Special Attack and Special Defense, was something that desperately needed to be done, and it's a wonderful addition. And this game is Pokémon; it's still the same fun, monster battling action, just more...flawed. Also, I didn't bring up Kanto because it's stupid and barren and boring. Next!
#5: Generation Four (Diamond/Pearl/Platinum)
If Platinum didn't exist, Gen 4 would just barely edge out Gen 2 as my least favorite. Diamond and Pearl are slow, empty, and dull. They're devoid of any life. But, Platinum came along and fixed everything. The battles were faster (albeit not as gloriusly fast as in Gen 5), the game seemed brighter and more fun. Platinum still isn't perfect; it's still pretty slow, and it's still pretty difficult to care about what's going on. There's never a real urgency. I was always like "I could go climb a mountain and stop Team Galactic...or I could go gamble to get TMs. I'll go gamble." Oh, and the music kinda sucks, with a few exceptions.
#4: Generation 1 (Red/Blue/Yellow)
The one that started it all. Are the games flawed? Oh, hell yes, they're some of the glitchiest, most unbalanced games I've ever played. But, that still doesn't stop their fun charm. There's just...something to these games. They're primitive and kind of broken, but they're still so much fun. People still love these games for non-nostalgic reasons. There's something magical here, something that transcends the hundreds of glitches and the lack of balance. And that's...really all there is to it.
RANKING SO FAR:
#6: Gen II
#5: Gen IV
#4: Gen I
Stay tuned for part 2!
