When does a story stop being a 'Short Story'

Lost

I've been writing a book for a while now, a book based on the lore of League of Legends, I quickly ran a word check on it and found out that I've written 30 pages (assuming an average of 240 words per page (to get this figure I chose a selection of pages from the hunger games and got the average word count from them))

Right now I consider myself to be nearly half way through chapter 2, although I've had writters block for 3+ months, I have started writing some short stories based on Assassins Creed, this got me thinking, what is the boundary betwwen a book and a shirt story.

So my question to you is - what do you think the boundary between a short story and a book is?

Apologies for any grammatical or spelling errors, writing on this iPad is laggy as hell.

I personally associate short stories as one shots. If your story has chapters, then it's more just a not-very long book and not so much a short story. A short story is a single story, no chapters, just one entity. I know that's not how everyone will look at it, but it's my definition.

Well, for me I think it's mainly how deep the story gets.

I can't "really" get into a short story if it stops too short or isn't as interesting as I thought it would be.

I mean, I've read tons of books. The Iliad, The Republic, Many of Shakespeare's plays, Edgar Poe's pieces, H.G Wells and many more....

I like the classics :P

@Comrade If you are a fan of the classics, can I safely assume you've read the brilliant works of H.P Lovecraft? :D

@Chaotic Discord. That's avfairly logical way of looking at it, what I am writing is by no means a short story, I am aiming for a minimum of 300 pages but realistically think can hit the 600 page Mark.

Welp, I took advanced writing so.........

a short story is usually a huge abstract metaphor for something else.

And every single line in the story has a deeper meaning and is essential to creating the larger metaphor.

If your story doesn't fit that than... it's just a regular novel.

Simple way of putting it: chapters equals novella at the least. Which, when you're bragging to your friends, sounds cooler than short story in my opinion. Heck, it sounds cooler than novel.
