Yeah, I suppose that was a simplified way of putting it in the first place If the story of Discord getting more and more jealous and desperate after every attempt to get Fluttershy's attention had something important to offer - like making Discord sympathetic and relatable or building to a really unique moral - then focusing on it would be important. But Discord's attempts to drop hints and force his way into the mingling just managed to feel unnatural, awkward, and tedious (to me, anyway), and the broad and basic moral would have been the same without any of those scenes. So I think it would have been better to just put all the focus on Discord's goofiness and his crazy attempts to steal back the spotlight.
