  1. 1. Which of these pro-brony blogs do you like most?

    • We Bronies Dissect the Show, and It's Grrrreat!
      3
    • A Response to "Outsider" Bronies

    • Bronies and the Explosion of Great Art
      3

For the past two weeks, I've churned out four brony-centric blogs, all very long and rather deep. As a fellow brony who's been seeing some discriminatory brony-bashing as well as annoying dismissals as MLP:FIM being a show "for [little] girls," I feel like I have to show my love as being one in the method I do best: editorial or essay writing. Present pro-brony arguments and demonstrate why being a brony is great.

These are my four pro-brony writings that I've submitted (from earliest date to latest date).

  1. MLP:FIM Returns the Franchise Where It Belongs: Back to Its Roots — My earliest submission, dated December 2. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the franchise altogether is misconstrued as a show targeted exclusively little girls. However, this essay shows why My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, along with its roots dated back to the early-1980s, is truly an age- and gender-neutral, where it belongs.
  2. We Bronies Dissect the Show, and It's Grrrreat! — Posted December 10. One unique part of the brony fandom is how we dissect the show and their episodes from its overall premise to its little detail in Rarity's shopping bag. It's sometimes dismissed as over-analyzing or overly critical, but the fact that we bronies analyze these shows to a fault represents how much we care about it. This essay explains why we analyze and why it's important doing so, even if to a fault.
  3. A Response to "Outsider" Bronies — Posted December 12. This editorial is my most personal of all of the brony essays. It's a response to the "bronies" who feel like they don't belong to the community and why they should love the community rather than bash it and the bronies themselves.
  4. Bronies and the Explosion of Great Art — Posted December 14. The longest of the essays, at over 12,000 characters. The brony fandom is full of fantastically talented people. Here, I explain why the brony fandom has such an influx of great art every day and how anyone can jump right in and join the fun.

Now I'm here to ask you which one of these four do you like most. This one will be a little difficult because of each one's specific length.

If you desire, please explain why you chose. (Be advised that any comments by non-mods are still under moderation. As long as it follows the rules of the forum and doesn't devolve into bashing or negatively generalizing bronies or the community [even subtly], I'll approve them for public viewing.)

Your 2nd essay was the best. I've gone over this a few times myself, but analyzations and such can have a profound effect on what the show can end up standing for. Our commitment in studying whatever they might toss at us can end up fuelling the fire for thousands of artwork, stories, and PMVs. While a relatively simple concept, it has its perks - while the show is simple enough, sometimes it is the simple things that are most worth and intriguing to dissect. Needless to say, I have already extracted several interesting things from many episodes that can not only be considered key to the show, but also claim relevance to one's own personal life.

I liked all of your recent blog posts. Seriously. I appreciate you taking time to write all that. But since I have to choose a favorite, I chose the one where you speak for "outsider" bronies, simply, because I feel it's the one that gives the best lesson to know about, and it's the one many people could use to tell others. =)

I really liked all your blog posts, I hadn't seen 1,2, or 4 before but I enjoyed them a lot. I can tell you put a lot of effort into your blog posts. I liked numbers 2 and 3 the most, but I'm gonna pick 3 as my favourite. It just seems like a great message to people who are one the fence about entering into the brony community. I really liked your point that MLP won't be around forever and that it'd be a shame to miss out on it, cause this has happened to me in other situations. Were I missed out on something great because I was hesitant or I joined in too late. I can really relate to that point.

I'm not sure what purpose you have in asking this question; consequently, I'm not sure what criteria I should use in evaluating the different entries. I liked reading entry #2 about dissecting the show the most, because that is the topic I personally relate the most to. Entry #2 made me think a little bit about why I enjoy and spend time doing logical/scientific analysis of shows I watch, like this one.

I didn't personally relate as much to the other entries: I have never watched/followed any previous generation (entry #1), I have not really come across "outsider" bronies (entry #3), and I don't make or pay any particular attention to fan art, music, etc. (entry #4). I'm not sure if I am unique in the fandom for not having done these things, so my personal experience may not be representative of a general fan (if that's what you were looking for).

If anything, I can relate to entry #3 a little bit in that I have seen my fair share of (in my opinion) shallow topics and posts on this forum, whereas I usually try to post only when I have something witty or thought-provoking to say. However, I have realized that not everyone will want to be intellectual all the time on a forum that they visit for fun in their free time. I also try never to put anyone down or "lecture" them because of perceived shallowness.

I like "Bronies and the Explosion of Great Art" (No. 4) as someone who is just getting her feet wet in creating for the fandom. I spent roughly a month on my first PMV, and it isn't that... great. But now, just starting on my second one, I can already see that its better.

No. 2 is also an important one. Analyzing things gives your brain some good exercise.

All four were absolutely fantastic essays to read, but I ended up voting for the final one, about the "explosion" of art because it is the one that I can most closely relate to on a personal level.

Although you didn't really highlight it in your essay, Dark Qiviut, fan sites are every bit as much an expression of fan "art" as drawing, music, animation, and game development. These monstrosities take an unbelievable amount of love and dedication to build - and there is most definitely an art to creating a good fan site.

Furthermore, unlike a work that is created once and then uploaded to the Internet, maintaining a large fan site is an ongoing commitment that guzzles thousands upon thousands of hours of unpaid personal time. Most people take the existence of their favourite fan sites for granted and don't have all that much awareness of what lies behind them, but they are still hugely rewarding in their own way.

And when a fan site, like Pony.fm, requires custom software development as well, additional skills quickly begin to stack, like programming, UX design, graphic design, etc.

Perhaps the best part about building and maintaining fan sites is that they can become a venue and a catalyst for all the other variations of fan labour to blossom and grow. :)
