Just something I noticed a bit in MLP:FIM. All of the races of ponies seem to all be categorized in different castes in pony society.

 

Earth Ponies= Basically the "working class" and the bottom rung of pony society. These ponies are usually labourers, farmers or slaves.

 

Pegasus Ponies=The middle class. These ponies create weather and are usually richer than earth ponies. Pegasus ponies also work as (incompetent) soldiers because all the royal guards are male pegasi. (With the exception of Shining Armor, who is a unicorn.)

 

Unicorns= The Upper Class. Usually richer and more well educated than the other two races.

 

Alicorns=Master race. Only 3 alicorns are supposedly exist in the show and they are all the godlike rulers of Equestria and hold absolute power over their people.

 

And if you look at some of the towns and cities in Equestria, they seem to reflect the majority race living in said city. For example, even though they are many unicorns living in Ponyville, the town seems to be mostly populated by Earth Ponies and seems to be a community based around agriculture. Cloudsdale is populated entirely by pegasus ponies and the city's purpose seems to be for creating weather. The pegasi also seem to be living in more extravagant homes. Canterlot seems to be populated almost entirely by unicorns and is the political capital of Equestria and the home of the Alicorns. Most unicorns in the city seem to be extremely rich and live in luxurious residences. Just an observation.

Yeah, I noticed that as well, and it seems to be a popular observation among fans. There's a definite degree of social stratification in Equestria.

 

Really, what do the earth ponies have? Physical strength? Motivation? Heart? Who needs those when you have the ability to fly and walk on clouds, or the ability to use goddamn magic? Earth ponies are inherently predisposed to work in menial labor as a result of their natural disadvantages. There's Filthy Rich, to be sure, but he doesn't appear nearly as powerful as Fancy Pants. Nor are there as many wealthy earth ponies as there are wealthy unicorns.

 

One might see earth ponies as the proletariat and unicorns as the bourgeoisie, with pegasi filling in both categories. A conflict arising from this social imbalance would make an interesting scenario.

Wow.  This was an extremely entertaining and interesting read! And to be honest, I don't think I've ever really taken a notice to it.  I have to an extent I suppose, but never -really- realized it until you mentioned it, if that makes any bit of sense.  I think back, and it's actually quite true!  I love things like this... notices/facts of any kind so this certainly kept me interested. :D Very intriguing.

I never really thought about that but I do remember reading this one alternate universe fanfic where Twilight Sparkle's "letters to Celestia" took on a bit more of a sarcastic, trolling tone instead of the usual "I learned something today" tone that we all know from the show. In a couple of these letters Twilight claimed that unicorns were the "master race" that the other ponies were "inferior" and another interesting note suggested that ponies start eating meat to "keep inferior species numbers down".
